McAfee keeps detecting a StartPage-GW virus - Limmy

Hello!

I stupidly opened a link via MSN Messenger, which has since created many problems - please help! :(
I have run Spybot, Ad-Aware, and McAfee too - which keeps detecting various files infected with a StartPage-GW virus, for example:

malignancy.exe
socks.exe
windows.exe

I keep deleting these Applications from the Internet temp files, but everytime (or almost everytime) I revisit this, they are still there.
Everytime I run Ad-Aware, it finds the same families, such as:

DyFuCA
Windupdates
istbar ... (I can't remember the exact name)

I do apologise if I am writing unnecessary information - I do not know much on spyware and the like, so I'm not sure what info you require!

This is the logfile for HJT:

    Limmy,

    Hi! and welcome to the Short-Media forums :).

    ===============

    Go to www.trendmicro.com, and then:

    1. Click "Free Online Scan".
    2. Click "Scan now, it's free".

    It'll take a few minutes to download (especially with a dialup connection), so be patient. When it's down:

    1. Select all available drives.
    2. Check(tick) "Auto Clean".
    3. Click "Scan".

    When it completes, post back the full filename of any files that cannot be cleaned or deleted.

    ===============

    Download the Adware.Istbar removal utility from Symantec and following the instructions on the same page.

    ===============

    We need to see if there are any program segments (prefetches) that may be present and are connected with the problems you are having. To do that, please do the following:

    1) Click "Start | Search", then search for each of these program's base name(s), in all files and folders:

    msnmessag.exe*
    jgpamon.exe*
    oizma.exe*

    2) Then if any are found in the 'prefetch' folder, delete them.

    Look closely, since the 'base' name will have a bunch of random numbers and letters attached to it.

    ===============

    Next, Open a command prompt by:

    1. Clicking "Start", then "Run...".
    2. Enter "cmd" (without the quotes).
    3. Enter "services.msc" (without the quotes).

    -

    Now, locate and 'stop' the following services, if present:

    MSN Messages ... (msnmessag.exe)

    Look carefully, since the name of the service (above) can be anywhere in the entry; also be careful not to 'stop' any required system services.

    ===============

    Run HiJackThis then:

    1. Click "Config..."
    2. Click "Misc Tools"
    3. Click "Open Process manager"

    -

    Next, while holding down the CTRL key, locate (if present) and click on (highlight) each of the following:

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\msnmessag.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\jgpamon.exe
    C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\oizm\oizmm.exe
    C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\oizm\oizma.exe

    Now double-check and make sure that only those item(s) above are highlighted, then click "Kill process". Now, click "Refresh", check again, and repeat this step if any remain.

    ===============

    Run HiJackThis and click "Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:

    R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

    O3 - Toolbar: ISTbar - {FAA356E4-D317-42a6-AB41-A3021C6E7D52} - C:\Program Files\ISTbar\istbarcm.dll (file missing)

    Now, with all windows closed except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

    ===============

    Locate and delete the following item(s), if present. Make sure your able to "view system and hidden files/ folders:"

    folders...

    C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\oizm
    C:\Program Files\ISTsvc

    files...

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\msnmessag.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\jgpamon.exe

    C:\WINDOWS\ohczgb.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\iohijn.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\fniol.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\nqdedqd.exe

    -

    Note that some of these file(s) may or may not be present. If present, and cannot be deleted because they're 'in use', try deleting them in "Safe Mode".

    -

    Reboot.

    ===============

    To help protect your system from hostile ActiveX content, or special 'downloadable' files:

    Download, install and keep updated, SpywareBlaster. If you've installed it for the first time:

    1) Check for any available updates; if present, they'll be automatically downloaded and installed.
    2) Next, "Enable all protection".
    3) Exit the program.

    -

    Note: Remember to regularly check for updates.

    ===============

    After rebooting your PC, post back a new log and let me know how everything goes.

    I was a little unsure on some of your instructions, so as you may imagine, I was reluctant to do some things, for example, checking/ticking on HJT: 'O4 - Global Startup: NETGEAR WG111T Smart Wizard.lnk = ?' as this is the wireless connection we use.

    One more query - when my computer was having these problems, 'socks.exe' was a file that kept reappearing as 'infected', and also in the Internet Temp files, amongst other applications I expect were from spyware/viruses. Now, although the computer seems fine, there is an icon for 'socks.exe' in the C drive, which I can't delete; a message comes up, saying something like 'make sure the disk is not full or write-protected, or that the file is not currently in use'. :scratch:

    Thanks a lot, once again!

    OK. Just a few more things for you to do...

    ===============

    Run HiJackThis then:

    1. Click "Open the Misc Tools Section"
    2. Click "Open Process manager"

    -

    Next, while holding down the CTRL key, locate (if present) and click on (highlight) each of the following:

    C:\socks.exe

    Now double-check and make sure that only those item(s) above are highlighted, then click "Kill process". Now, click "Refresh", check again, and repeat this step if any remain.

    ===============

    Run HiJackThis and click "Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [pohcx] C:\WINDOWS\pohcx.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Anti-Virus Update Scheduler V1.39.12R] C:\socks.exe
    O4 - Global Startup: NETGEAR WG111T Smart Wizard.lnk = ?

    Now, with all windows closed except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

    ===============

    Locate and delete the following item(s), if present. Make sure your able to "view system and hidden files/ folders:"

    files...

    C:\socks.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\pohcx.exe

    -

    Note that some of these file(s) may or may not be present. If present, and cannot be deleted because they're 'in use', try deleting them in "Safe Mode".

    -

    Reboot.

    ===============

    After rebooting your PC, post back a new log and let me know how everything goes.

    -

    Congratulations! Your log looks clean - good work!

    ===============

    Post back if you still have problems and we will see what we can do.

    ===============

    Here's a canned I will be posting for each finished log :D.

    Now that your PC is clean you need to follow these easy steps to keeping it this way:

    Secure your Internet Explorer by going here and following the setup instructions.

    Use a firewall to help prevent your PC's control being usurped by undesireables. There is a link to a good, free firewall in my signature.

    Install and keep updated, Ad-Aware SE, and Spybot S&D.
    Run them both on a regular basis, following the manufacturer's recommendations.

    Install an anti-virus. There are some good, free AV's available today. Make sure that it is updated regularly and have it scan your system often.

    Download Spywareblaster, from www.javacoolsoftware.com install and keep it updated to help keep your system clean.
    Once you have checked for updates, click the 'enable all protection' link.

    Check for Windows Updates. Microsoft regularly post updates for your systems safe running. Make sure to take advantage of this. Reboot when installed and return to make sure there are no others. Go here

    Clear your Temp folders.
    Clear out your Temporary internet files and other temp files.
    Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel >Internet Options.

    Under the General tab click the Delete temporary internet files,
    delete all Offline content as well. Clear out Cookies.

    Also, go to Start > Find/search > Files or folders > in the named box, type: *.tmp and choose Edit > select all -> File > delete.

    Empty/delete the entire contents of the C:\Windows\temp folder and C:\temp folder, if you have one. (Contents but not the folder itself.)

    This one too if Win2K or XP.
    C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temp\

    In order to view these files you may have to select 'show hidden files/folders.' Instructions on how to here.

    Empty the Recycle Bin.

    ===============

    If you're having any more problems, post back.

    -

    Happy surfing,

    crunchie.
