Please help ...127.0.0.1

Hi, I found my host file loaded with all the antivirus sites set to 127.0.0.1. I was able to delete them all no problem, but don't know what caused it. I've run Spybot, Ad-Aware, Shredder, and Norton AV which did find Bloodhound.Exploit.21 which I was able to get rid of. However I am still suspicious because NAV autoprotect keeps disabling. Also do you know what Microsoftsa32.exe is, it seems to be all thru my computer and it wasn't before.
Here's a copy of my HJT file, any help would be appreciated.

    Bones,

    Hi! and welcome to the Short-Media forums :).

    ===============

    Go to www.trendmicro.com, and then:

    1. Click "Free Online Scan".
    2. Click "Scan now, it's free".

    It'll take a few minutes to download (especially with a dialup connection), so be patient. When it's down:

    1. Select all available drives.
    2. Check(tick) "Auto Clean".
    3. Click "Scan".

    When it completes, post back the full filename of any files that cannot be cleaned or deleted.

    ===============

    We need to see if there are any program segments (prefetches) that may be present and are connected with the problems you are having. To do that, please do the following:

    1) Click "Start | Search", then search for each of these program's base name(s), in all files and folders:

    microsoftsa32.exe*

    2) Then if any are found in the 'prefetch' folder, delete them.

    Look closely, since the 'base' name will have a bunch of random numbers and letters attached to it.

    ===============

    Next, Open a command prompt by:

    1. Clicking "Start", then "Run...".
    2. Enter "cmd" (without the quotes).
    3. Enter "services.msc" (without the quotes).

    -

    Now, locate and 'stop' the following services, if present:

    Ms Configuration ... (microsoftsa32.exe)

    Look carefully, since the name of the service (above) can be anywhere in the entry; also be careful not to 'stop' any required system services.

    ===============

    Run HiJackThis then:

    1. Click "Config..."
    2. Click "Misc Tools"
    3. Click "Open Process manager"

    -

    Next, while holding down the CTRL key, locate (if present) and click on (highlight) each of the following:

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\microsoftsa32.exe

    Now double-check and make sure that only those item(s) above are highlighted, then click "Kill process". Now, click "Refresh", check again, and repeat this step if any remain.

    ===============

    Run HiJackThis and click "Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Ms Configuration] microsoftsa32.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [Ms Configuration] microsoftsa32.exe
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Ms Configuration] microsoftsa32.exe
    O4 - HKCU\..\RunServices: [Ms Configuration] microsoftsa32.exe

    Now, with all windows closed except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

    ===============

    Locate and delete the following item(s), if present. Make sure your able to "view system and hidden files/ folders:"

    files...

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\microsoftsa32.exe

    -

    Note that some of these file(s) may or may not be present. If present, and cannot be deleted because they're 'in use', try deleting them in "Safe Mode".

    -

    Reboot.

    ===============

    After rebooting your PC, post back a new log and let me know how everything goes.

    Crunchie,
    Thanks for your help. Trendmicro found 9 virus' , and was able to delete all but the microsoftsa32.exe. But I went thru the rest of your suggestions, and seems to have cleared it out. Here's my new log, let me know if you see any more problems.

    Congratulations! Your log looks clean - good work!

    Regarding your previous thread. If you find it then just go to Thread Tools and you can close the thread. Otherwise just give me the link and I will close it for you :).

    ===============

    Post back if you still have problems and we will see what we can do.

    ===============

    Here's a canned I will be posting for each finished log :D.

    Now that your PC is clean you need to follow these easy steps to keeping it this way:

    Secure your Internet Explorer by going here and following the setup instructions.

    Use a firewall to help prevent your PC's control being usurped by undesireables. There is a link to a good, free firewall in my signature.

    Install and keep updated, Ad-Aware SE, and Spybot S&D.
    Run them both on a regular basis, following the manufacturer's recommendations.

    Install an anti-virus. There are some good, free AV's available today. Make sure that it is updated regularly and have it scan your system often.

    Download Spywareblaster, from www.javacoolsoftware.com install and keep it updated to help keep your system clean.
    Once you have checked for updates, click the 'enable all protection' link.

    Check for Windows Updates. Microsoft regularly post updates for your systems safe running. Make sure to take advantage of this. Reboot when installed and return to make sure there are no others. Go here

    Clear your Temp folders.
    Clear out your Temporary internet files and other temp files.
    Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel >Internet Options.

    Under the General tab click the Delete temporary internet files,
    delete all Offline content as well. Clear out Cookies.

    Also, go to Start > Find/search > Files or folders > in the named box, type: *.tmp and choose Edit > select all -> File > delete.

    Empty/delete the entire contents of the C:\Windows\temp folder and C:\temp folder, if you have one. (Contents but not the folder itself.)

    This one too if Win2K or XP.
    C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temp\

    In order to view these files you may have to select 'show hidden files/folders.' Instructions on how to here.

    Empty the Recycle Bin.

    If you're having any more problems, post back.

    Happy surfing,

    Crunchie,
    Thanks for all your help. I had closed this thread, but have reopened it again.
    I went thru all of your suggestions, and it all seemed fine, but I've run into problems again. Norton AV autoprotect is diabled again, and I can't get it to stay on. After my last discussion with you, I ran thru all the regular checks once again. During my spybot check, NAV came up with a virus alert (W32.Spybot.Worm), which it said was also associated with microsoftsa32.exe. I went thru their suggestions for ridding it, and all seemed to be fine.
    However yesterday NAV autoprotect turned off again. I've gone thru all of your previous suggestions, and can't find anything wrong.

    When I attempt to enable Auto-Protect through the NAV System Status screen, I get the following Internet Explorer Script Error:
    An error has occurred in the script on this page
    Line: 887
    Char: 5
    Error: Unspecified
    Code: 0
    URL: res://C:\PROGRA~1\NORTON~1\NAVUI.dll/navstats.htm

    When I try to enable Auto-Protect from the Options screen, I get the following Internet Explorer Script Error:
    An error has occurred in the script on this page
    Line: 29
    Char: 5
    Error: Unspecified
    Code: 0
    URL: res://C:\PROGRA~1\NORTON~1\NAVOPTS.DLL

    I don't know if it means anything, but I don't usually use Internet Explorer, I've been using Mozilla Firefox. Although I had to use IE to comply with your suggested use of Trendmicro.
    I would much appreciate any further suggetions. Thanks, Here's my latest log.

    There is nothing showing in that log. Go here and download and run Silent Runners.vbs. It generates a log, please post the information back in this thread.

    Hi,
    I downloaded silent runners, but when I try to run it, Norton AV stops it with an "Alert: Malicious script detected". Should I still let it run thru?

    Yes. I should have mentioned that possibility. It is not a malicious script.

    Good news is there is nothing showing in that log. Bad news is there is nothing showing in that log :).

    Try this scan at Panda and see what it finds.

    Could be that you end up reinstalling Norton. Had to do it myself a few times. Not using it anymore :D.

    Hi Crunchie,
    Sorry I've taken so long to respond. I do appreciate all your help. I checked with Panda, and they did find more stuff in my computer which I was able to get rid of. However that hasn't stopped the auto-protect from turning on and off, although it hasn't been as bad lately. I'm going to reconsider all of my AV solutions, maybe try something else, as I seem to spend most of my computer time cleaning it out. The most recent problem is with my Search and Destroy. I don't want to keep bothering you, but what do you make of this log from Spybot. It seems to me that a setting of 4 in the Zonemap is what I want, yet this says it is a trusted site, and spybot can't fix it. Thanks again.

    Download Delete Domains from here and run it. It will delete all entries from the trusted and restricted zone.

    Not sure what is happening with Spybot, but delete domains will clear out all entries from the trusted and restricted zone.

    That solved the Spybot problem. Again, thanks for all of your help.
