Spyware is killing my PC.

Hi there, I was recommended this site by a friend who absolutely swears by your ability to help, and I'm basically begging for it. I've had this PC for about a week now and already it's uber infected. My home page is constantly hijacked and I get popup after popup (usually popups about removing spyware, which is increasingly frustrating). I used adware, spybot, and hijack this. However I just had one of the popups come while writing this thread. my homepage is still a hijacked one, so please help me.

Make a new folder on your desktop and name it 'SpSeHjfix112'.
Download SpSeHjfix112 place it in the new folder and unzip the program.

Disconnect from the net and Close ALL OPEN PROGRAMS.
Run SpSeHjfix112 and click on "Start Disinfection".
When it's finished it will reboot your machine to finish the cleaning process.
The tool creates a log of the fix which will appear in the new folder.


Please post a new hijackthis log and the log from SpSeHjfix.

Download KillBox and unzip it to your desktop.

Open Killbox and select the Delete on reboot option.


Copy and paste the following file to the field labeled "Full path of file to delete"

c:\windows\system32\systr.dll

Press the Delete button (the button that looks like a red circle with a white X in it).

A first dialog box will ask if you want to delete the file on reboot, press the YES button.

A second dialog box will ask you if you want to REBOOT now. Press the NO button.


Copy and paste the following file to the field labeled "Full path of file to delete"

c:\windows\system32\param32.dll

Press the Delete button (the button that looks like a red circle with a white X in it).

A first dialog box will ask if you want to delete the file on reboot, press the YES button.

A second dialog box will ask you if you want to REBOOT now. This time press the YES button.


Your computer will reboot.

My Desktop is still, hijacked and it's not allowing me to change anything through properties.

Try this. It's one of Crunchie's fixes.

Go to system properties (right click MyComputer > properties) > Advanced tab > under startup and recovery click settings > under System failure make sure "Write an event to the system log" is checked AND that "Automatically restart" is UNchecked. Then under *write debugging info* select (none) > Click "OK" and reboot.

Unfortunately it didn't work. It's a blue screen that's telling me that by a trojan-spy.html

It says the system can not function in normal mode, please check your security settings.

Try this:

• Click Start>Control Panel>Display
• Go to the Desktop tab and click on the Customise Desktop button.
• Go to the Web tab
• In the web page box, click on the page that is checkmarked and then click the Delete button.
• Ok your way out of the dialog and check your desktop.

Under dislpay settings all I have is screensaver and settings. There are no other tabs

Double click it and ok the prompt. Reboot and check your settings again. You should have a desktop tab now.

I have the tabs now but under web there is nothing to delete... it shows home page but it isn't checked and checking it does not open the option to delete it. I can now see the options for desktop images but everything is greyed out.

We're closer but I still can't make my desktop stop being the error message.

Right click on http://www.greyknight17.com/spy/RepairDesktop.reg and download that file. Double click on it and click on Yes when it asks you if you want to merge it into the registry. Once that's done, restart your computer.

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

1. Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and reenable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point left over from what we have just cleaned.

2. Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
   1. From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
   2. Click once on the Security tab
   3. Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
   4. Click once on the Custom Level button.
      1. Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
         
      2. Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
         
      3. Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
         
      4. Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
         
      5. Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
         
      6. Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
         
      7. When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
         
      8. If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
   5. Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
   
   
3. Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

4. Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
   
   
5. Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

6. Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
   
   
7. Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

8. Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.

9. Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

10. Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.
