Trojan-Spy Smitfraud problem - help!

Here is the message on the log-on screen (all icons present, can still go online, although the home page is different - I think it's an IE search page):

A fatal error in IE has occurred at 0028:C0011E36 in VXD UMM(01)+00010E36.
Error was caused by Trojan-Spy.HTML.Smitfraud.c

System cannot function in normal mode. Please check your security settings.
Scan your PC with any available anti-virus / spyware remover program to fix the problem.

PS. The brackets on line 5 are the pointy kind, not as shown.

I ran adaware, spybot and hijackthis, with no apparent effect. The hijack log is as follows:

You have at least three separate infections. Let's get rid of Wintools first, which should make your computer run a little better so we can get rid of the rest of it.

Wintools may have an entry in the Add/Remove Programs Control Panel. If so, it may be easy to get rid of. If not, there are still ways to remove it from your system.

    For either solution:

    Reboot into Safe Mode.
Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode. To get back to normal mode just restart the computer as you normally would.

    Once in Safe Mode:
Click on the Start Button, Control Panel. Double-click on Administrative Tools then on Services.
Look for a service called Wintools for IE Service. double-click it to open, then click the Stop button and change the "Startup type" to Disabled.
(If the service is not there, no worries...all the better!)

Next, right-click on the Windows Taskbar and select Task Manager.
In the Processes tab, look for WToolsA.exe, WToolsS.exe and WSup.exe. If any or all of these exist, right-click on each one and select End Process Tree, and answer affirmatively to any confirmation questions.

At this point, you can check the Add/Remove Programs Control Panel. If there is an uninstaller for Wintools, try running it now. I would still recommend proceeding through the rest of this fix even if there is an uninstaller, however.

Now, please open a command prompt (Start button -> Run, type cmd and click "OK"). at the prompt, type
    regsvr32 /u /s "C:\Program Files\Toolbar\toolbar.dll" then <ENTER>.
Then type exit to close the command prompt window.

Now, we can proceed to delete these directories, located at:

    C:\Program Files\Common Files\WinTools <-- Delete the BOLD directory.
    C:\Program Files\Toolbar <-- Delete the BOLD directory.

Reboot and post a new hijackthis log.

Many thanks. I don't think I'm quite there yet. I did everything you suggested, although the command prompt didn't seem to be recognized and WToolsB.dd refused to delete (this may be open or blah blah). All the other steps were completed. When I boot the system back up, the rogue home page loads up immediately (which never happened before, I usually have to click on the icon) along with an AVG ad (how do I get rid of THAT, can't seem to find it on my system) BUT the "System cannot function in normal mode.." is gone.

You are currently using hijackthis from a temp directory. This can cause problems. Please create a directory on your c: drive called c:\hijackthis and download and unzip hijackthis into that directory. Run the program from that directory from now on. It is essential that you follow these steps or certain important features of the program will not function correctly.

Please follow these steps to remove the HSA from your computer.

    Step 1
Download cwsserviceremove.zip and extract it to your desktop:
    http://lineofire.geekstogo.com/cwsserviceremove.zip

    Step 2
Download this tool called AboutBuster http://www.downloads.subratam.org/AboutBuster.zip
Unzip it to your desktop but don't run it yet.

    Step 3
Download Adaware SE Personal from http://www.lavasoft.de/english/default.shtml. Install and open Adaware and click on *Check for Updates Now* and then *Connect*. It will find a new reference-file. Click *ok* and let it download and install the updates by clicking on *Finish* .This will return you to the main screen. Exit Adaware.

    Step 4
Print out these instructions so you have them handy as most of the steps need to be done in safe mode and you may not be able to go online.

    Step 5
Make sure your PC is configured to show hidden files.
Open Windows Explorer & Go to Tools > Folder Options. Click on the View tab and make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked. Also uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and untick "hide extensions for known file types" . Now click "Apply to all folders"
    Click "Apply" then "OK"

    Step 6
Next, go to Start->Run and type "Services.msc" (without quotes) then hit Ok

Scroll down and find the service called Workstation NetLogon Service. When you find it, double-click on it. In the next window that opens, click the Stop button, then click on properties and under the General Tab, change the Startup Type to Disabled. Now hit Apply and then Ok and close any open windows.

    Step 7
    Reboot to Safe Mode
Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode. To get back to normal mode just restart the computer as you normally would.

    Step 8
Scan with Hijack This and put checks next to all the following, then click "Fix Checked"

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\jnpvz.dll/sp.html#28129
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\jnpvz.dll/sp.html#28129
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = about:blank
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\jnpvz.dll/sp.html#28129
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\jnpvz.dll/sp.html#28129
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\jnpvz.dll/sp.html#28129
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\jnpvz.dll/sp.html#28129
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\jnpvz.dll/sp.html#28129
    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar,LinksFolderName =
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {8674F6CD-EB6E-CD07-FBE1-506F82436CC8} - C:\WINDOWS\addgr32.dll
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [mfcqm.exe] C:\WINDOWS\mfcqm.exe
    O23 - Service: Workstation NetLogon Service ( 11Fßä#·ºÄÖ`I) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\system32\javapv32.exe

and delete the following files if present(do not be concerned if some do not exist).

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\javapv32.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\jnpvz.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\addgr32.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\mfcqm.exe

    Step 9
Double click AboutBuster.exe that you downloaded earlier. Click OK, click Start, then click OK. This will scan your computer for the bad files and delete them. Save the report(copy and paste into notepad or wordpad and save as a .txt file) and post a copy back here when you are done with all the steps.

    Step 10
Scan with Adaware and let it remove any bad files found.

    Step 11
Clean out temporary and TIF files. Go to Start > Run and type in the box: cleanmgr. Let it scan your system for files to remove. Make sure these 3 are checked and then press *ok* to remove:

    Temporary Files
    Temporary Internet Files
    Recycle Bin

    Step 12
Find the cwsserviceremove.reg that you downloaded in Step one. Double click on the cwsserviceemove.reg Answer ‘Yes’ when asked to have its contents added to the Registry.

    Step 13
Reboot to normal mode, scan again with Hijack This and post a new log here.

    Step 14
Finally, do an online scan at one of the following sites. Let it remove any infected files found.
    http://housecall.antivirus.com
    or
    http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/com/activescan_principal.htm

Post a fresh HijackThis log and the AboutBuster report back here please.

    Thanks. I followed your instructions.
However, the Hijack log seems to change each time (I haven't scanned with the other tools each time, just at the beginning). The first part remains the same - HKCU/Software/Microsoft/Internet Explorer/Main/Search Bar = res://C://WINDOWS (the obliques are wrong) but the section after that changes each time. The number at the end remains constant, however. Does it matter? Here is the new log from this morning: xsmmm.dll has become vlabe.dll.

Yes, the filenames can, and will, change every time you reboot or use IE. But the pattern is the same and you should be able recognize which files need to be deleted.

Please download CWShredder but don't run it yet.
    http://cwshredder.net/bin/CWSInstall.exe

    Download Ad-aware SE 1.05 from: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download506.html
Install the program and launch it. First, in the main window, look in the bottom right corner and click on Check for updates now and download the latest reference files. Exit Adaware for now.

Make sure that you can view all hidden files. Instructions on how to do this can be found here:

How to see hidden files in Windows

Run Hijackthis again, click scan, and Put a checkmark next to each of these. Then close all other windows--you should only see HijackThis on your Desktop--and click the Fix Checked button.

I followed all your instructions. Wasn't sure if you wanted a new Hijack log or the Adaware log. Here are both, beginning with Hijack:

I would get the latest version of AVG. It looks like you are still using version 6.

    Your log is clean!

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
    1. Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and reenable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point left over from what we have just cleaned.

You can find instructions on how to enable and reenable system restore here:

      Managing Windows Millenium System Restore

      or

      Windows XP System Restore Guide

Renable system restore with instructions from tutorial above

    2. Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
      1. From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
      2. Click once on the Security tab
      3. Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
      4. Click once on the Custom Level button.
        1. Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
        2. Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
        3. Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
        4. Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
        5. Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
        6. Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
        7. When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
        8. If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
      5. Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

    3. Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

See this link for a listing of some online & their stand-alone antivirus programs:

Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources

    4. Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

    5. Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

      Understanding and Using Firewalls

    6. Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

    7. Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers

    8. Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Ad-aware to remove Spyware, Malware, & Hijackers from Your Computer

    9. Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

    10. Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Buckeye - thank you so much, this is a wonderful site.
Everything seems to be back to normal. I updated several programs, as you suggested, particularly in Windows there were a ton - which may have been at least part of my problem.

There is one remaining issue, run-time errors, for which I have started a new thread.

    Thanks again!
