HijackThis log

First, thanks to everyone who help folks like myself on this site. Your selfless donation or your time is much appreciated. I have run AdAware and S&D and continue to have problems. Some items just won't delete! I did a search and came upon this site and realized many people are having problems similar to mine. I downloaded HijackThis and here are the results:

The fact that there are people out there who not only can understand what all the stuff above means but are willing to take the time to decipher it and help is truly a beautiful thing. Thanks in advance. JO'C

Please download and install A-Squared. You will have to register with them in order to install the updates, but it's free. Once updated, run a full scan and remove everything that is found.

    http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4281.html

Please run at least two of these online scans.
Make sure they are set to clean automatically:

    http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/com/activescan_principal.htm

    http://www.bitdefender.com/scan/licence.php

    http://housecall.trendmicro.com/housecall/start_corp.asp

There will be files that these scans will not remove. Please include that information in your next post.

Reboot and post a new hijackthis log.

Thanks for your help Buckeye. I downloaded and ran A squared. It was able to delete all the problems it found. Ran ActiveScan and it found over 100 problems and was only able to fix 12 of them. I'll post the report here. I ran into some problems after that. Tried to run bitdefender and after 2 hours it had only scanned 4,000 files (Activescan processed over 260,000) so I terminated the program (it didn't find any problems in those 4,000 files). I then tried to run housecall but I kept getting an error message saying "unable to load virus scan engine". I did a reboot and ran hijackthis. Here is the log:

You've got a load of bad guys still showing in your log. A few of them demand a specific fix, so this is going to take several steps. You are running Norton and Mcafee at the same time. This is a bad idea. It's best to pick one and get rid of the other one.

Please make sure that you can view all hidden files. Instructions on how to do this can be found here:

How to see hidden files in Windows

Place a checkmark next to these entries, close all browsers and windows, and have HijackThis fix them by clicking Fix Checked:

Note that not every one of these lines is malware. Some are just unnecessary startup items that will help your system load quicker. Which you will appreciate because you will be rebooting a lot the next few days.

    Delete temp files

Navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Navigate to the C:\Windows\Prefetch folder. Open the Prefetch folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Prefetch folder.

Go to Start > Run and type %temp% in the Run box. The Temp folder will open. Click Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Finally go to Control Panel > Internet Options. On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files". Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK. Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then OK.

    Empty the Recycle Bin.

Reboot your computer to go back to normal mode.

Now that we have you a little cleaned up we can first work on your VX2 infection.

Download L2mfix from one of these two locations:

    http://www.atribune.org/downloads/l2mfix.exe
    http://www.downloads.subratam.org/l2mfix.exe

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

Also post a new hijackthis log.

Buckeye, I can't thank you enough for the help. re. Norton and McAfee, I am running Norton antivirus and McAfee fire wall (not running McAfee antivirus). Is there a compatability issue with doing this? The Norton utility I have doesn't have a fire wall and I'm not happy with McAfee antivirus so I'm doing things this way for now. I followed all the instructions and everything went great except for 2 temporary files which wouldn't delete: Dr Temp and nsn52.tmp. Here are the results of the l2mfix.bat scan:

Mcafee and Norton usually don't play together very well, but as long as you are not using two antivirus programs or two firewalls at the same time you should be ok.

Close any programs you have open since this step requires a reboot.

From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing enter, then press any key to reboot your computer. After a reboot, your desktop and icons will appear, then disappear (this is normal). L2mfix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it back into this thread, along with a new hijackthis log.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

    Welcome back! :)

Download LSPFix from http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.zip and run it.

Check the I know what I'm doing box.

In the Keep box you should see one or more instances of the following files.

    dolsp.dll

Select every instance of this file(if exists), but no others, and move each one to the Remove box by clicking the >> button.

When you are done click Finish>>.

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
    http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
Install it, and download all updates. Then exit Ewido once all updates are installed.

Please run Notepad and copy the following text into a new file:
    @ECHO OFF
    cd %windir%
    Nail.exe /FULLREMOVE
    sc config SvcProc start= disabled
    sc stop SvcProc
    sc delete SvcProc
    attrib -s -r -h nail.exe
    attrib -s -r -h svcproc.exe
    del nail.exe
    del svcproc.exe
    cd %windir%\system32
    attrib -s -r -h DrPMon.dll
    del DrPMon.dll
    exit

Save the file to the desktop as remove.bat and make sure the "Save as type" field says "All files".

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode
Once in Safe Mode, please double-click on remove.bat. A window should open and close very quickly --- this is normal.

Please make sure that you can view all hidden files. Instructions on how to do this can be found here:
How to see hidden files in Windows

Run a full scan with Ewido, remove anything found, and then restart into normal mode and post the logfile from the scan for me.

Now open up Hijackthis. Place a checkmark next to these entries, close all browsers and windows, and have HijackThis fix them by clicking Fix Checked:

Restart your computer and please post a new HijackThis log and the log file from the Ewido scan.

Thanks again Sam. Ran into some problems trying to complete the instructions. When I ran LSPFix the file 'dolsp.dll' was already in the remove box. It was the only instance of the file so I clicked 'finish'. Moved on and things were going well until I tried to run Ewido. I ran it last evening and after about 20 minutes it was only 10% done so I had my son monitor it since I had to go to work. He later told me the computer shut off before it could finish the scan. It is a Toshiba laptop and we have been having trouble with it overheating and shutting down. So this morning I tried again, this time pausing the scan every 15 minutes. After 4 hours I was up to 75% done when an error message popped up: 'encountered problem, have to close'. So I forged ahead and restarted the computer and ran hijackthis. 3 of the items I was to click on and fix weren't there:
    F2-REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe
    O4-HKLM\..\Run: [{12EE7A5E-0674-42f9-A76B-000000004D00}] rundll32.exe
    O23-Service:System Startup Service (SvcProc)-unknown owner-C:\Windows\svcproc.exe

The rest of the items I checked and fixed. I then tried to delete the files and directories you requested but none were there. Here is the latest hijackthis log:

Thanks Sam. Do I need to figure out a way to get Ewido to run all the way through? JO'C

It looks like Ewido ran long enough to take care of the problems because...

    Your log is clean!!

Are you having any problems now? How are things running?
  • edited May 2005
Things are running fine! Pop-ups have been eliminated and startup doesn't take 10 minutes any more. :D I can't thank you enough. JO'C
