Internet going extremely slow

edited April 2005 in Science & Tech
Here's my problem: My computer (dell pentium 3 - Windows XP) is on a basic cable connection with a D-Link wireless router (its connected on the LAN not wirelessly). Recently the internet has been acting extremely difficult to use. I will open internet explorer and my homepage (msn.com) will begin loading and load up about 90% then slowely load the rest. Then I try to go to any webpage either a link on thier website or i will type in google.com and it will never load. I have tried changing the homepage, I have even erased the entire harddrive and reloaded windows XP with no updates. Still the 1st greenbar will appear and then it will say Page Cannot Be Displayed. Someone please suggest something!

Thanks

wow, if you hadn't have formatted, i'd say virus. you can try running a repair on the o/s....but i would definately power cycle all hardware...i.e.: router, swithches, etc. hell, scan it for spyware and viruses anyway.

First, try hijackthis from our downloads section and post a log in the correct forum. Secondly, try Ad-Aware and Spybot, finally, SWITCH TO FIREFOX!!! This will save you from having these issues again.

    Adaware: http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-SE-Personal-Edition/3000-8022_4-10319876.html?tag=lst-0-1

    Spybot: http://www.download.com/Spybot-Search-Destroy/3000-8022_4-10289035.html?tag=lst-0-1

    Hijackthis: http://www.download.com/HijackThis/3000-8022_4-10379544.html?tag=lst-0-1

    Firefox: http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/

Download, install, update, and run these programs. Save a copy of your hijackthis log and post it here when you are done, we can take it from there.

BTW: If you can't get them through your own connection, see if someone you know with a good connection and a CD burner can help you out.

Alright well I called the cable company and they said my connections was very low and suggested I just try using the internet without the router until them come out to check the lines. So i just plug my computer directly into the modem with the same results. But I noticed that when i look at my connection stats that the Sent Packets is much lower then the recieved. Is that because I am directly in the modem now where as before I was behind the router? And could it the cable companys fault or could it be something on my end?

    Status: Connected
    Duration: 2 Days 02:30:05
    Speed: 10.0 Mbps
    Packets Sent/Recieved: 46,435/3,267,390
