Windows Media PLayer Hijacked + reoccuring trojans

Hello, hope someone can help. Everytime I try and launch the Windows Media Player a pop-up dialog pops up saying "AlwaysUpdatenews browser enhancer" and therefore i can't play any file on WMP. This seems to be linked to "winupdt.exe". Also, I have "Backdoor.Laphex" files, which i believe are trojans, that keep infecting my computer; they are named "userinit.dll" and variations of this form: "A0029381.dll". I have run Ad-Aware and Spybot S&D. Any help will be appreciated. thanks for your help.

    Reboot your computer into Safe Mode

    Then delete these files or directories (Do not be concerned if they do not exist):

    C:\WINDOWS\System32\ypdh.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\sfu.dll
    C:\Program Files\Viewpoint
    C:\windows\system32\C32SBb.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\ekkwecwh.exe
    C:\Program Files\Privacy Champion
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\tss.exe



    Delete temp files

    Navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

    Navigate to the C:\Windows\Prefetch folder. Open the Prefetch folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Prefetch folder.

    Go to Start > Run and type %temp% in the Run box. The Temp folder will open. Click Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

    Finally go to Control Panel > Internet Options. On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files". Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK. Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then OK.

    Empty the Recycle Bin.



    Reboot your computer to go back to normal mode.



    Launch Notepad, and copy/paste the box below into a new text file. Save it as FindFile.bat and save it on your Desktop.

    notepad files.txt


    Locate FindFile.bat on your Desktop and double-click on it. It will open Notepad with some text in it. Please post the text here along with a new hijackthis log.

    Your log looks clean, but you still need to get rid of that trojan file.

    C:\WINDOWS\System32\??xplore.exe

    The ?? could represent any character, but you want to look for a file that is around 425kb in size and was created on 4/6/05. Once you find it, delete it.


    How is your computer running now? Any problems?

    hi, i did find that file and it was named iexplore.exe, so after deleting it i still could not open any windows media files. so i was thinking that maybe the trojans kept popping up because they were stored in system restore, so i turned off system restore, booted up in safe mode, and scanned with my antivirus program and found nothing. i also rolled back windows media player just in case and all of this seemed to work. i can play media files now in WMP and so far no sign of winupdt.exe. thank you for your help!

    i also had a question about "userinit.dll" which is listed as a backdoor.laphex (trojan). it seems to be connected to userinit.exe. is userinit.exe necessary to have on my computer or can i delete it? like userinit.dll doesn't seem to do anything harmful, but it is annoying since it keeps popping up in my AntiVirus program on startup. thanks again for all of your help!

    There will be files that these scans will not remove. Please include that information in your next post.
