I Believe I have a spyware problem

Hello all,

This is my first posting to this forum - please let me know if I have made any faux pas in terms of etiquette (although I did read all the stickies!).

I have an eMachine computer with the following specifications:
Celeron D Processor: 2.66 gHz; 256 L2 Cache; 533 MHz FBS
512 RAM.

I first started to notice slow downs within programs about a week ago, and then two days ago my computer has come to a virtual stand still. Any graphics programs are very "jerky", and boot up (which previously took less than a minute) now can take 8+ minutes. I ran recently purchased Norton utilites (i.e. AntiVirus, SpeedDisk) on my computer, with no appreciable changes in speed.

I've run the latest versions of AdAware and Spybot, and have unhidden previously hidden files and folders.

We'll need to unload Spybot's Teatimer before we begin. To do this can you start Spybot and go to Tools > Resident and uncheck the box next to Tea-Timer. Make sure that the icon in the system tray is no longer there. If it is, just right click on it and select "Exit". Do not forget to re-enable it when we are done .

Run HiJackThis and click "Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:

When your done, rescan your system and make sure the following isn't present:

N3 - Netscape ... 5CSBWeb_01.src (or) 5CSBWeb_02.src

If it is, then fix that entry again; sometimes it'll take more than one pass. The actual entry is ok, and won't be deleted, it's the java wrapper marked in red that needs to be removed.

To help protect your system from hostile ActiveX content, or special 'downloadable' files:

Download, install and keep updated, SpywareBlaster. If you've installed it for the first time:

1) Check for any available updates; if present, they'll be automatically downloaded and installed.
2) Next, "Enable all protection".
3) Exit the program.

Note: Remember to regularly check for updates.

Okay, I did as you directed: unloaded Spybot's Teatimer; went into HiJackThis and removed the lines you suggested; clicked "Fix checked"; and then checked to see if the N3 - Netscape....src was not present (it was not).

Downloaded/installed SpywareBlaster, enabled all protection, exited program, and then rebooted.

The computer is still slow, but less so (yea!).

......Okay, while I was looking in my task manager, I ran across a system process called lsass.exe. Checking around, it looks like this is the win32 sasser virus (version E!). When I attempt to shut down the process in task manager, I get the message that this is a core system process, and cannot be shut down. Thus, when I try to run the fix tools for the sasser virus, it cannot detect it (even though it clearly is in task manager).

..SO, I get the bright idea to start the computer up in safe mode, and get the message that I have a corrupted/missing hal.dll file. Thinking that this is no major problem (I do have the original boot/installation disks that came with my computer), I jump online and grab what I thought was the most recent version of hal.dll, drop it into the win32 systems folder, and restart - and get a lovely corrupted disk/disk error message. I should have run it off the disk, but it was not immediately accessible - actually, I was just too bleeding lazy to scrongue through my desk to find it. I can boot the computer fine running it on the systems restore disk, but not from the hard drive. It appears as if all my programs/data are FINE.

I have one point, and then two questions:

1. I'm an idiot. :shakehead
2. Is there a way to restore my computer so I can actually run the computer from my hard drive?
3. Once that is managed, how does one go about getting the lsass.exe/sasser virus off my computer?

Okay, fixed my hard drive problem (went back to an early saved system restore - which I had the foresight to turn back on yesterday), and reran HiJack This, have shut off unnecessary processes/start up programs.

To add some insult to injury, it looks like I was over reacting yesterday evening regarding lsass.exe - in my over tiredness, it looks like I may have confused lsass.exe with the sasser virus (doing a bit more research, it looks like there is a relationship between the two, but they aren't the same thing).

I think my problem with slow down is all fixed.
