What is ICQ?

What is ICQ?
I have never needed it and really, I am not even
sure how I got it.
I did take it off of my toolbar on IE and now just noticed that it made a spot for itself on my Outlook toolbars. Is this a necessary program or one that just keeps making itself at home in my system. I have half a mind to get rid of it just because it seems to do whatever it wants to.
can someone please shed some light here for me?

    ICQ (I seek you) is an instant messaging program, like AIM... I've never heard of it behaving that way. You might have a Trojan horse that is disguising itself as ICQ... I'd say get rid of it if you can.

    if you have ICQ and you don't remember installing it, then most likely you have a virus as CB said. ICQ is a very benign program, and its not the type of popular thing that wuold be bundled with other installs
