About blank HSA Problems from Kevin Martin

I appreciate all that you do to make life easier for the rest for users. As an early Compuserve user from the dial-up days, I understand the contribution that volunteers like you make.

Also, per your instructions, have used Ad-Aware Personal and SpyBot destroyer. Complete description of steps I have taken is below.

System Overview:
I am running Windows XP Professional 2002 Service Pack 2. Access internet via cable Modem (Comcast) via a Linksys RT31P2 broadband router.

Problem Description:
Thursday, April 28 –

While surfing the internet and viewing various Recruiting Software Sites was redirected to an adult site and noticed that my IP address appeared in the lower left-hand corner of the window. Went to task manager and ended the task, but it was too late (should have used Alt-F4 but was not thinking). Home page was directed to about:blank, favorites now included Seven Days of Porn, etc. and had Home Search Assistant and the two other programs that could not be removed via control panel.

Called my tech friends who sent a copy of Hijackthis and suggested I check for help on the web.

Downloaded and installed Microsoft Antispyware (beta).

Friday, April 29
1. Found your site searching the web and followed the instructions from Dexter’s excellent Home Search Assistant Removal Guide posting from 8-14-04 found at
http://www.short-media.com/forum/showthread.php?t=18846

1. Tried HS Remove, but problem recurred.
Below is initial HJT Log - Hijackthis429

2. Followed all steps from Home Search Assistant Guide (Hijackthis, Aboutbuster, etc.) but used Microsoft AntiSpyware instead of Spybot Destroyer. Only active service was Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Helper. Nothing found in Regedit, so only checked Regedit for this first interation. Also tried running CWShredder. Also used "The Cleaner" to remove a trojan.

3. After 5 iterations (running HJT, Aboutbuster, ad-aware and MS Antispyware) returned to the Short-media website. Did one more clean using
updated Ad-aware and Spybot Destroyer. Below is the most recent HJT log:
Other information points:

· Norton Auto-protect has been disabled and will not re-enable.
· Microsoft AntiSpyware attempts to block about:blank and the associated fake .exe files, but they eventually seize control of the browser.
· HijackThis is using the following defaults when trying to make fixes, and I am not sure that they are correct:
o Default Start Page: About:Blank
o Default Search Page: http://www.microsoft.com/isapi/redir.dll?prd=ie&ar=iesearch
o Default Search Assistant: http://ie.search.msn.com/{SUB_RFC1766}/srchasst/srchasst.htm
o Default Search Customize: http://ie.search.msn.com/{SUB_RFC1766}/srchasst/srchcust.htm

I appreciate any assistance. I have tried to provide details to help. Please let me know if there is any other information that you need.

Regards,

--Kevin

You may want to print out these instructions or save them to your desktop as a text file with Notepad because we will be restarting into Safe Mode later on in the fix and you might not be able to access the Internet.
    1. Prepare CWShredder for use:
      • Download CWShredder.
      • Save CWShredder.exe to a convenient location.
      • Please do not do anything with it yet.
    2. Prepare AboutBuster for use:
      • Download AboutBuster.
      • Unzip the contents of AboutBuster.zip and an AboutBuster directory will be created.
      • Navigate to the AboutBuster directory and double-click on AboutBuster.exe.
      • Click "OK" at the prompt with instructions.
      • Click "Update" and then "Check For Update" to begin the update process.
      • If any updates exist please download them by clicking "Download Update".
      • You should not run the program yet so click "Exit".
    3. Prepare cwsserviceremove.reg for use:
      • Download cwsserviceremove.zip.
      • Unzip the contents of cwsserviceremove.zip (cwsserviceremove.reg) to your desktop.
      • Please do not do anything with it yet.
Reconfigure Windows XP to show hidden files:
    Click Start. Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options. Select the View Tab.

Under the Hidden files and folders heading select "Show hidden files and folders".
Uncheck the "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" option.
Uncheck the "Hide file extensions for known file types" option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.

    Boot into Safe Mode:
Restart your computer and immediately begin tapping the F8 key on your keyboard.
If done right a Windows Advanced Options menu will appear. Select the Safe Mode option and press Enter.
To return to normal mode just restart your computer as you normally would.
    1. Run CWShredder:
      • Double-click on CWShredder.exe.
      • Click "Fix ->" and click "OK" at the prompt.
      • CWShredder will scan and clean your system of CWS files.
      • Click "Next->" and then "Exit".
    2. Remove the offending service:
      • Double-click on cwsserviceremove.reg you downloaded earlier.
      • When it asks you to merge the information to the registry click "Yes".
    3. Run AboutBuster and save the logs:
      • Browse to where you saved AboutBuster and run AboutBuster.exe.
      • Click OK at the directions prompt.
      • Click Start and then OK to allow AboutBuster to scan for Alternate Data Streams.
      • Click Yes to allow it to shutdown explorer.exe.
      • It will begin to your computer for malicious files. If it asks if you would like to do a second pass, allow it to do so.
      • When it has finished, click Save Log. Make sure you save it as I need a copy of it.
    4. Clean out temporary files:
      • Start | Run | type cleanmgr | OK
      • Let it scan your system for files to remove.
      • Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are the only things checked.
      • Click "OK" to remove them.
      • Click "Yes" to confirm the deletion.
    5. Restart your computer normally to return to normal mode.
    6. Free TrendMicro Housecall scan:
      • Vist the TrendMicro Housecall website.
      • Select your country from the drop-down list and click "Go".
      • Choose "Yes" at the ActiveX Security Warning prompt.
      • Please wait while the Housecall engine is updated.
      • Select the drives to be scanned by placing a check in their respective boxes.
      • Check the "Auto Clean" box.
      • Click "SCAN" in order to begin scanning your system.
      • Please be patient while Housecall scans your system for malicious files.
      • If not auto-cleaned, remove anything it finds.
      • Click "Close" to exit the Housecall scanner.
      • Choose "Yes" at the HouseCall message prompt.
    7. Prepare your reply:
      • Please post a fresh HijackThis log
      • Please post the AboutBuster log.
      • Please note any complications you had.

    Buckeye_Sam:

Thanks so much for your prompt response. I followed all of your instructions. Everything worked well until the TrendMicro Housecall scan.

It did not seem to install the ActiveX control (xscan53.cab). The Microsoft error message was as follows:

    AppName: iexplore.exe
    Appver: 6.0.2900.2180
    ModName: msvert.dll
    ModVer: 7.0.2600.2180
    Offset: 000360cb

I tried this three times and received the same message. I wanted for 35 minutes on the last try to see if the TrendMicro scan would work, but nothing happened. Below are the 5/2/05 Hijackthis log and the aboutbuster log.

    Thanks again!

Ok, we'll have to try this another way. But first...

You are using an outdated version of Hijackthis.
Please download the current version of Hijackthis and post a new hijackthis log.

Thanks for the heads-up on HJT. I downloaded the updated and did a "Scan and Save Log File". The log file is below.

Please download CWShredder but don't run it yet.

    Download Ad-aware SE 1.05
Install the program and launch it. First, in the main window, look in the bottom right corner and click on Check for updates now and download the latest reference files. Exit Adaware for now.

Make sure that you can VIEW ALL HIDDEN FILES.

Run Hijackthis again, click scan, and Put a checkmark next to each of these. Then close all other windows--you should only see HijackThis on your Desktop--and click the Fix Checked button.

Your log looks clean to me!

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
    1. Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and reenable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point left over from what we have just cleaned.

You can find instructions on how to enable and reenable system restore here:

      Managing Windows Millenium System Restore

      or

      Windows XP System Restore Guide

Renable system restore with instructions from tutorial above

    2. Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
      1. From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
      2. Click once on the Security tab
      3. Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
      4. Click once on the Custom Level button.
        1. Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
        2. Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
        3. Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
        4. Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
        5. Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
        6. Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
        7. When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
        8. If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
      5. Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

    3. Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

See this link for a listing of some online & their stand-alone antivirus programs:

Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources

    4. Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

    5. Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

      Understanding and Using Firewalls

    6. Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

    7. Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers

    8. Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Ad-aware to remove Spyware, Malware, & Hijackers from Your Computer

    9. Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

    10. Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

    Buckeye_Sam:

Thank you for all of your help. I can't thank you and the other members of Short-media enough. I am through step #3 of your recommendations and am about to uninstall and reinstall Norton Antivirus, since the auto-protect is not working.

Also, I will probably install the "Tiny" firewall, since I used in previously when running Windows 98.

Is Paypal the only way to donate to short-media? I have heard bad things about paypal from others and wanted to know if there are other options.

Thanks again and have a great day.
