Ready to remove Ad/Spy-ware

All, I am glad to have found this site because like most, a PC i have is laden with Ad/Spyware that wasn't caught by some Spyware Apps and didn't show up as "virus" using Nortan (Symantec) AV. I found this site via the link:
short-media.com/forum/showthread.php?t=31482

I have downloaded the spyware utilities outlined and recorded the Log files from this. I am currently not at the infected PC, but will return to complete the removal steps once I receive your help - thanks.

I have the "HiJackThis.log" log file. Please instruct how to proceede. Thank you much, Johnny.

Please remove these entries from Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel(if present):

    Media Pass
    Media Access

Please make sure that you can view all hidden files. Instructions on how to do this can be found here:

How to see hidden files in Windows

Place a checkmark next to these entries, close all browsers and windows, and have HijackThis fix them by clicking Fix Checked:

    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar,LinksFolderName =
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AlcxMonitor] ALCXMNTR.EXE
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [7FsV36U] odpsrpcn.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [checkrun] C:\windows\system32\eliteyzk32.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Kvzpem] C:\Program Files\Poxvde\Vahhfu.exe

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Media Access] C:\Program Files\Media Access\MediaAccK.exe
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Mo39RWY5Q] nwedbg.exe

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode

Then delete these files or directories (Do not be concerned if they do not exist):

    ALCXMNTR.EXE
    nwedbg.exe
    odpsrpcn.exe
    C:\windows\system32\eliteyzk32.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\GSMedia3.exe
    C:\Program Files\Poxvde\Vahhfu.exe
    C:\Program Files\Media Access

Reboot your computer to go back to normal mode and post a new log.

Oh, forgot to ask if all this should be done with WinXP's "System Restore" turned off? I am thinking yes, correct?

    Thanks.

It doesn't matter right now. Your system restore files are most certainly infected, so we will want to flush them out when your log is clean. So you can do it now, or you can do it later.

Ok, I followed the instructions and have two concerns that I encountered. I will summarize my steps and then post my last HiJackThis.LOG.

    My two concerns are:
    1) appears one more SPY-BUG remains - I see a system dialog window on each startup: "Invalid BackWeb application ID 137903". Each time I start Windows, this dialog appears.

    2) my Nortan Antivirus application starts up with an attempt to do a Full System Scan. This not scheduled, but something is kicking off NAV. What?

    THANK YOU very MUCH!

    Here is my summary:

** ALL THIS DONE WHILE SYSTEM-RESTORE TURNED OFF FOR ALL DRIVES **

Used HiJackThis.exe to "Fix" the following:

    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar,LinksFolderName =
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AlcxMonitor] ALCXMNTR.EXE
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [7FsV36U] odpsrpcn.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [checkrun] C:\windows\system32\eliteyzk32.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Kvzpem] C:\Program Files\Poxvde\Vahhfu.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [GMedia2] C:\WINDOWS\System32\GSMedia3.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Media Access] C:\Program Files\Media Access\MediaAccK.exe
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Mo39RWY5Q] nwedbg.exe

    ** Rebooted in Safe-Mode, still SYSTEM-RESTORE turned OFF **

    Deleted these:

    ALCXMNTR.EXE - found in 2 places
    C:\Windows\ALXCMNTR.EXE
    C:\Windows\system32\ReinstallBackups\0007\DriverFiles

    nwedbg.exe - NOT FOUND
    odpsrpcn.exe - NOT FOUND

    c:\windows\system32\eliteYZK32.exe - Found 26 instances of "elite???32.exe"
    C:\Windows\PreFetch\elite???.exe-*.pf (11 instances)
    C:\Windows\system32\elite???.exe (15 instances) all dated 08/19/2001, 05:30 AM, 11.3-11.6 KB

I deleted all 26 instances

    GSMedia3.exe - NOT FOUND
C:\Program Files\Poxvde\Vahhfu.exe - OOPS! launched (dbl-clicked) by accident, then eventually deleted.

    C:\Program Files\Media Access - NOT FOUND?

    ** Rebooted, then re-ran CWShredder.exe, reboot, Spybot S&D, AdAware SE **

    Spybot Search & Destroy:
    AdmilliService 1
    AlexaRelated 1
    BackWeb lite 60
    CallingHome.biz 1
    DyFuCA.InternetOptimizer 1
    Elitum.EliteBar 1
    Exact Advertising.BargainsBuddy 2

    AdAware SE:
104 Critical Objects - MRU List (40 instances); WindUpdates (13); Alexa (11); ElitumElitebar BHO (5); Possible Browser Hijack (75)

    ** Rebooted, then re-ran Spybot S&D, AdAware SE - STILL System-Restore OFF **

Windows (Process) dialog appears with message: "Invalid backWeb Application ID 137903" -- I closed with "X" in upper right corner, not "OK" button.

    Spybot Search & Destroy:
    "Congratulations, No Immediate Threats Found!"

    AdAware SE:
    4 Minor objects (?) - just MRU's

    ** Rebooted - STILL System-Restore OFF **

Windows (Process) dialog appears with message: "Invalid backWeb Application ID 137903" -- I closed with "X" in upper right corner, not "OK" button.

    Fix this line with Hijackthis.

    O4 - Global Startup: Updates from HP.lnk = C:\Program Files\Updates from HP\137903\Program\BackWeb-137903.exe

Please run at least two of these online scans.
Make sure they are set to clean automatically:

    Panda Virus Scan

    Bit Defender

    TrendMicro Housecall

There will be files that these scans will not remove. Please include that information in your next post.

Reboot and post a new hijackthis log and the info from your virus scans.

Per your suggestions, I ran HijackThis.exe to remove the \Hp\...\backWeb-137903.exe.

While running HijackThis.exe, there was a reoccurence of:

    c:\Windows\system32\eliteYZK32.exe
    c:\Program Files\Poxude\Vahhfu.exe

After checking all of the above and letting HijackThis.exe remove them,
I went back and searched for the previous offenders. I found only

    C:\HP\drivers\audio\Realtek_MCPC\ALCXMNTR.exe (and deleted it).

I then logged out and ran:

BitDefender8: (first attempt with not fully updated definitions)

    C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\Quarantine\5AD144CD
    Infected with: Win32.Netsky.C@mm

    C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\Quarantine\5AD144CD

    C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\Quarantine\6B7D3C31
    Infected with: Win32.Netsky.C@mm

    C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\Quarantine\6B7D3C31
    Deleted

I logged out and downloaded the PandaSoftware.

Here are the results from Panda:

    Incident Status Location

    Adware:Adware/nCase No disinfected C:\Temp\FLEOK
    Adware:Adware/WinTools No disinfected C:\DOCUME~1\Matt\LOCALS~1\Temp\down.cab

    Adware:Adware/StartPage.DD No disinfected C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\systemprofile\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\0H2F0XIF\protector_update[1].exe

I then got the complete download, with all definitions, for BitDefender.

Here are the results from BitDefender8:

    C:\Program Files\AIM\Sysfiles\WxBug.EXE=>wise0008
    Detected with: Adware.Wheaterbug.A

Without restarting, I ran HijackThis.exe to get the following:

I am still in "System-Restore OFF" mode. The BitDefender8 log files are in HTML format. I did not list the entire file,
do you need to see the rest of these .HTML files?

For the PandaSoftware, I don't remember if I had the "automatically clean" option set. I think I pretty much stuck with the defaults for this.

As before, thank you for helping with my malware problem.

    Best regards,
    Johnny

Please download, install, and run Cleanup 4.0
    http://cleanup.stevengould.org/

That should get rid of any adware that is hiding in your temp folders. Your log looks clean. Are you having any problems now?

After my last post and before your reply, I had re-ran the Panda Virus Scan (pandasoftware.com/activescan/...). It reported 2 more malware items:
    Fizzle - C:\Program Files\FwBarTemp (empty directory)
    EliteBar - C:\Documents and Settings\Matt\Favorites\Finances & Business (empty directory)

I did a quick look on the Net for Fizzle and found something to look for:
    C:\Windows\Prefetch\DFRGNTFS.EXE-38C3807C.pf

    I deleted all these.

I am still concerned as to why my Norton AntiVirus launches each time on startup. I don't have this as a scheduled event. I look in "Start | All Programs | Startup" and don't see an instance of Norton AntiVirus. When NAV starts, it looks to be doing a full system scan starting at C:\ (boot sectors, ....)

I will get Cleanup 4.0 and run.

One more question set: can I (eventually) remove the utility apps (Panda's Active Scan, BitDefender, AdAware, ...) from my system? Some of these apps appear to record/send activity back over Net.

Thanks so much for all the help. My system is running noticably faster. I'm using FireFox browser (v1.0.3) as much as possible. When I do use IE, I don't get the pop-ups I had in the past.

    Best Regards,
    Johnny

Your Norton launches a scan because of the settings you have in place. I don't know Norton but you should be able to adjust that setting in Norton's options.

    Fix these lines with Hijackthis.

    O16 - DPF: {5D86DDB5-BDF9-441B-9E9E-D4730F4EE499} (BDSCANONLINE Control) - http://www.bitdefender.com/scan8/oscan8.cab
    O16 - DPF: {9A9307A0-7DA4-4DAF-B042-5009F29E09E1} (ActiveScan Installer Class) - http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/as5/asinst.cab

That will get rid of the active-x controls that are used by the online virus scans.

You can safely delete everything in this folder. In fact, it's a very good idea now that you are cleaning up from an infection.

    C:\Windows\Prefetch

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
    1. Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and reenable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point left over from what we have just cleaned.

You can find instructions on how to enable and reenable system restore here:

      Managing Windows Millenium System Restore

      or

      Windows XP System Restore Guide

Renable system restore with instructions from tutorial above

    2. Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
      1. From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
      2. Click once on the Security tab
      3. Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
      4. Click once on the Custom Level button.
        1. Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
        2. Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
        3. Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
        4. Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
        5. Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
        6. Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
        7. When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
        8. If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
      5. Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

    3. Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

See this link for a listing of some online & their stand-alone antivirus programs:

Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources

    4. Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

    5. Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

      Understanding and Using Firewalls

    6. Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

    7. Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers

    8. Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Ad-aware to remove Spyware, Malware, & Hijackers from Your Computer

    9. Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

    10. Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.
