Ready to remove Ad/Spy-ware

All, I am glad to have found this site because like most, a PC i have is laden with Ad/Spyware that wasn't caught by some Spyware Apps and didn't show up as "virus" using Nortan (Symantec) AV. I found this site via the link:

I have downloaded the spyware utilities outlined and recorded the Log files from this. I am currently not at the infected PC, but will return to complete the removal steps once I receive your help - thanks.

Oh, forgot to ask if all this should be done with WinXP's "System Restore" turned off? I am thinking yes, correct?

It doesn't matter right now. Your system restore files are most certainly infected, so we will want to flush them out when your log is clean. So you can do it now, or you can do it later.

Ok, I followed the instructions and have two concerns that I encountered. I will summarize my steps and then post my last HiJackThis.LOG.

My two concerns are:
1) appears one more SPY-BUG remains - I see a system dialog window on each startup: "Invalid BackWeb application ID 137903". Each time I start Windows, this dialog appears.

2) my Nortan Antivirus application starts up with an attempt to do a Full System Scan. This not scheduled, but something is kicking off NAV. What?

Per your suggestions, I ran HijackThis.exe to remove the \Hp\...\backWeb-137903.exe.

While running HijackThis.exe, there was a reoccurence of:

After checking all of the above and letting HijackThis.exe remove them,
I went back and searched for the previous offenders. I found only

I am still in "System-Restore OFF" mode. The BitDefender8 log files are in HTML format. I did not list the entire file,

For the PandaSoftware, I don't remember if I had the "automatically clean" option set. I think I pretty much stuck with the defaults for this.

After my last post and before your reply, I had re-ran the Panda Virus Scan (pandasoftware.com/activescan/...). It reported 2 more malware items:

Fizzle - C:\Program Files\FwBarTemp  (empty directory)
EliteBar - C:\Documents and Settings\Matt\Favorites\Finances & Business (empty directory)

I did a quick look on the Net for Fizzle and found something to look for:
C:\Windows\Prefetch\DFRGNTFS.EXE-38C3807C.pf

I deleted all these.

I am still concerned as to why my Norton AntiVirus launches each time on startup.

I don't have this as a scheduled event. I look in "Start | All Programs | Startup" and don't see an instance of Norton AntiVirus. When NAV starts, it looks to be doing a full system scan starting at C:\ (boot sectors, ....)

I will get Cleanup 4.0 and run.

One more question set: can I (eventually) remove the utility apps (Panda's Active Scan, BitDefender, AdAware, ...) from my system? Some of these apps appear to record/send activity back over Net.

Thanks so much for all the help. My system is running noticably faster. I'm using FireFox browser (v1.0.3) as much as possible. When I do use IE, I don't get the pop-ups I had in the past.

Your Norton launches a scan because of the settings you have in place. I don't know Norton but you should be able to adjust that setting in Norton's options.

Fix these lines with Hijackthis.

That will get rid of the active-x controls that are used by the online virus scans.

You can safely delete everything in this folder. In fact, it's a very good idea now that you are cleaning up from an infection.

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and reenable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point left over from what we have just cleaned.

Renable system restore with instructions from tutorial above
Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
1. From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
2. Click once on the Security tab
3. Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
4. Click once on the Custom Level button.
  1. Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
  2. Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
  3. Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
  4. Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
  5. Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
  6. Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
  7. When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
  8. If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
5. Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.
