trojan-spy.html.smitfraud.c help requested, Blackporcupine
Hiya, I hope you can help with yet another case of this darned Trojan that seems to be doing the rounds.
I had the irritating blue screen with the fatal error message, though I could still use my computer, connect to the internet (carefully) etc. Things were running slowly though and crashing fairly frequently.
I don't have my own virus scanner on my computer so I used the free Mcafee one, which identified one file (something like windows.mht or similar) but it wouldnt remove it without payment. So I tried the Panda one which showed that one plus a number of others which Mcafee seems to have been ignoring for the past 3 years. It then 'disinfected' my computer but yet the blue screen remained. I did a few web searches regarding my virus and found various bits of advice, though the only one that I could easily do was find the C:/wp.bmp file which is (partly at least) responsible for the blue.
Oh, I also found an interesting piece of software called securityIguard which claimed to be able to scan my computer etc. But since I had never doen anything that might even remotely install this on my computer I ran its uninstall program.
Finally I found this wonderful site and have followed its advice. I've run Adaware SE and spybot, both of which found bits and pieces and deleted them. After this, the blue screen has disappeared and I'm left with a purely black one. The option to change the background has disappeared from the desktop options menu. I've downloaded and run HJT and it has produced a log file (see below). Could you check this for me to see if the problem really has been fixed or if theres something lying hidden somewhere? Also, could you tell me if its possible to get my desktop background back?
Thanking you in advance,
Blackporcupine (Or James as I'm more frequently called
)

Reboot your computer to go back to normal mode.
Once you have rebooted download the following reg file to your desktop by right clicking on the link, and selecting save as.
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/reg/smitfraud.reg
Once it has downloaded, double-click on the smitfraud.reg file on your desktop and when it asks if you would like to merge the data, click on the Yes button.
Reboot your computer and you should now be able to change your desktop settings back to how you would like it. If your desktop still looks strange, go into your display properties and click on the Themes tab. Change the theme to Windows XP and you will now be using the default Windows XP settings. Then change them as you see fit.
Reboot and post a new hijackthis log and let me know of any problems you experienced.
Have performed all the tasks you said, everything seems fine now, my desktop pictures back and its running faster than it has done for many a month. Many many many thank yous! Just one last thing, can I move or delete the smitfraud.reg file now that its been merged?
Cheers,
James

Your log is clean!
Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
- Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and reenable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point left over from what we have just cleaned.
- Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
- From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
- Click once on the Security tab
- Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
- Click once on the Custom Level button.
- Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
- Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
- Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
- Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
- Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
- Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
- When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
- If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
- Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
- Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.
- Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
- Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.
- Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
- Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.
- Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.
- Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.
- Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically. You can find instructions on how to enable and reenable system restore here:
