I was wondering how you set up how to really restrict and deny access to files and folders on Windows XP

When I do it and sign in as a guest or other user I can still access everything.

I wan't to be able to hide my computer, recycle bin, certain startmenu programs etc.

Check out this link on Windows XP NTFS permissions. Understanding NTFS Permissions
Or this M$ link Use Access Control to Restrict Who Can Use Files
Or this M$ link on Group Policy using gpedit.msc
Customizing your computer using Group Policy

I tried those and it is really scary I thought I was going to lock myself out of my own files isnt there an easier way to do this.

Like on school networks where it says you do not have permission to view/change/this or that.

That is not the only way to do this right  I hope not.

Because I wanted to let some friends use my computer but I didn't want them messing up anything. :shakehead

Is there a free non virus adware program out there that can do this.

You can use Share level permissions but you don't have the granular control you have with NTFS and Group Policy. On networks these policies have been set at the domain level for the User Group(s) you have membership in or they're applied via Active Directory.

There may be programs out there that do this but I'm not familiar with them. Sorry there's no EASY way to learn Share vs. NTFS security/administration. The best way to learn is to setup a lab, get the MS-PRESS books and go thru the labs.
