Trojan in req.dll - please help me get rid of it
Hi,
I'm having problems with a Trojan Horse that I can't seem to get rid of. I'm not at-all knowledgeable about technical issues so I'd be ever so grateful for your help!
Here are the details (followed by a hijackthis log). I'm running Windows XP on a Dell laptop:
Norton AntiVirus detected 'Download.Trojan' in C:\WINDOWS\System32\req.dll a few days ago, but said it was "unable to repair this file". I followed their removal instructions (disable System Restore, resart in safe mode, run a system scan, resart in safe mode and delete 'Download.Trojan' files in Windows Explorer), but in the end I was unable to delete the file because it was 'in use' or something like that (can't remember the exact message, sorry).
I then tried XoftSpy, which removed some cookies and told me there was a Trojan in file C:\WINDOWS\System32\req.dll and registry key SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify\req. It said they had been 'successfully deleted', but in fact they were still there when I ran the scan again two minutes later!
I've also run Adaware SE and Spybot1.3 as suggested, which got rid of a few cookies.
Here is my hijackthis log:
Thank you very much for any help,
Judy

Fix that entry then find and delete this file:
C:\WINDOWS\System32\req.dll
Then reboot and post a new log.
I 'fixed' that entry in Hijackthis, then tried to delete it. At first I couldn't because the files in the 'Windows' file are "hidden and should not be modified", so I tried in safe mode and got the same message as before, that the file was in use by another application and couldn't be deleted.
I'll post my new Hijackthis log below, but I don't think anything has changed. I still have a Norton Virus Alert on my screen and my computer is running very slowly.
Please let me know if you have any ideas!
Thanks for your time and your help,
Judy

thanks very much for replying to my message. I'll post a new hijackthis log below, but I'm sure nothing will have changed as I wasn't able to delete the file using the above method and don't know what else to do! Do you have any suggestions?
thanks,
Judy

Download the Pocket Killbox.
Unzip the contents of KillBox.zip to a convenient location and then double-click on KillBox.exe to launch the program.
- Highlight the lines below and press the Ctrl key and the C key at the same time to copy them to the clipboard:
[*]Now go to the Killbox application and click on the File menu and then the Paste from Clipboard menu item. In the Full Path of File to Delete box you should see the first file. If you dropdown that box you should see the rest of them. Make sure that they are all there.C:\WINDOWS\System32\req.dat
C:\WINDOWS\System32\req.dll
[*]Click on the Delete on Reboot option and then click on the red circle with a white 'X' in to to delete the files. Killbox will tell you that all listed files will be deleted on next reboot, click YES. When it asks if you would like to Reboot now, click YES. If you get a "PendingFileRenameOperations Registry Data has been Removed by External Process!" message then just restart manually.
You system will reboot now.
Please run at least two of these online scans.
Make sure they are set to clean automatically:
Panda Virus Scan
Bit Defender
TrendMicro Housecall
There will be files that these scans will not remove. Please include that information in your next post.
Reboot and post a new hijackthis log and the info from your virus scans.
thanks a lot for your help, I would have no idea what to do without you guys! I've done what you said, and it seems to be working (at least the Norton AntiVirus warning has finally disappeared.....).
A new hijackthis log is below.
The Bit Defender scan found various things, the results are below.
TrendMicro Housecall did not find any viruses.
Panda Virus Scan (once I finally got it to download...) also said 'no viruses have been found'.
Thanks again. Please let me know what else I need to do.

Reboot and post one last hijackthis log.
I've fixed those lines with hijackthis. Here's the new log. Thanks so much for your help.
One question: my Norton AntiVirus subscription has just expired. Would you recommend me to renew it immediately or are there any more effective options?
Judy

I'm not a big Norton fan. It's been my experience that it doesn't block a lot of trojans that I've seen other antivirus program catch and remove. Norton is also a know resource hog and will slow your computer down considerably.
An excellent free option is AVG(direct link in my sig), which I would recommend over Norton any time. If you are willing to pay a few bucks look into Panda, Trend Micro, Kaspersky, or Nod32. All, in my opinion, are better options than Norton.
Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
- Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and reenable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point left over from what we have just cleaned.
- Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
- From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
- Click once on the Security tab
- Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
- Click once on the Custom Level button.
- Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
- Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
- Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
- Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
- Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
- Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
- When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
- If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
- Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
- Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.
- Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
- Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.
- Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
- Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.
- Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.
- Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.
- Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically. You can find instructions on how to enable and reenable system restore here:

Thank you for all your help and advice. Everything seems to be running ok now.
I've done 1. disable and enable system restore and 2. make Internet Explorer more secure (although nothing needed changing there).
I've now got Spybot S&D and Adaware and I'll try and get SpywareBlaster as soon as I have time.
I'll have to find out about the anti-virus software and firewalls (I think I have the Windows XP one running, but don't know anything about it!). Would I have to uninstall or somehow delete Norton Antivirus if I decide to use a different product? (don't know how I'd do that!).
Anyway, I'll stop pestering you with questions. You've solved my Trojan problem and I'm very grateful!! I think it's great that you're willing to give your time and expertise to help people.
Thank you so much,
Judy
