Hello,

My computer was hijacked by a pesky Trojan Horse. Here are the details (followed by a hijackthis log). I'm running Windows XP home version on a Sony VAIO laptop,. I’ve followed your instructions on running Spybot and Ad-aware and I also ran Killbox.exe

Fix these entries:

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [WindowsFY] c:\bsw.exe
O4 - Startup: desktop(2).ini
O4 - Global Startup: desktop(2).ini

Then find and delete the following files:
c:\bsw.exe
desktop(2).ini

Then reboot your computer and post a new log.

I was able to fix: O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [WindowsFY] c:\bsw.exe

But was unable to fix:

O4 - Startup: desktop(2).ini
O4 - Global Startup: desktop(2).ini

I received this error message when attempting fix the above two issues:

Unable to delete the file:
04 - Startup: desktop(2).ini

The file may be in use. Use the Task Manager to shutdown the program and run Hijack This again to delete the file.

Boot into Safe Mode (Press F8 at the BIOS screen when booting) and fix these entries:

O4 - Startup: desktop(2).ini
O4 - Global Startup: desktop(2).ini

Still in Safe Mode, find and delete desktop(2).ini, then boot back into Normal Mode and post a new log.

That fix is complete! To answer your question, “Are you still having any problems?” The answer is, “Yes!”

1. Currently my desktop screen is black. When I go to my Display Properties box, the only options that appear are the Screen Saver and the Settings. The tabs for Desktop, Appearance and Themes are nowhere to be found.

2. In my Control Panel, almost all of the entries are duplicated, (i.e. Accessibility Options appears twice, as well as; Add Hardware, Add or Remove Programs, Date and Time, Display, Game Controllers, Internet Options, etc.

3. When I go to Start – Programs and view the various programs, most of them have a duplicate, (i.e., Microsoft Word and then Microsoft Word(2), Microsoft PowerPoint and then Microsoft PowerPoint(2), etc.

4. When I perform a file search on the desktop(2).ini file, each search produces more files. Currently I have 372 files related to this search. The entries show up as
