The other day my background got turned blue with white writing that said

Security Warning A fatal error in IE has occurered at 0028:C0011E36 in VXD VMM(01) + 00010E36. Error was caused by Trojan-Spy.HTML.Smitfraud.c

System cannot function in normal mode

Scan your PC with any available antivirus / spyware remover
program to fix the problem.

then i ran a few anti-adware and virus scans and it went away and turned black but i cant change the back ground. i scanned it with Hijackthis and heres the log:

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:

Install it, and download all updates. Then exit Ewido once all updates are installed.


Please download and install Cleanup 4.0
http://cleanup.stevengould.org/



Please run Notepad and copy the following text into a new file:

Save the file to the desktop as remove.bat and make sure the "Save as type" field says "All files".

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode
Once in Safe Mode, please double-click on remove.bat. A window should open and close very quickly --- this is normal.

Run CleanUp 4.0 that you installed earlier.



Run a full scan with Ewido, remove anything found, and then restart into normal mode and post the logfile from the scan for me.



Now open up Hijackthis. Place a checkmark next to these entries, close all browsers and windows, and have HijackThis fix them by clicking Fix Checked:

hi i did all the thing you told me. Ewido never finished and i ran bout 3-4 times it kept on failing but any way heres my hijackthis log. I also kept on getting adverts by auora (i dont know if its spelt right) but i havent noticed it as much at the moment.

Your best best to get rid of Mcafee is to reinstall the program. That should restore the uninstaller and then you can uninstall through the Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs.

I also recommend uninstalling Spyware Vanisher. It's a rogue program which you can read more about here.

My background is still black and i cant change it because the virus got rid of the options to change the background its left me with screensaver and settings and i was wondering if you could help me get it back. Because i got the same virus upstairs in my room (i've isolated it from the intrnet) i've found 2 things in the C:/ drive called 'wp' one of them is an application and the other is a .bmp image and i started playing with the .bmp and whatever is on there is whats on my back ground. Download the following reg file to your desktop by right clicking on the link, and selecting save as.

Once it has downloaded, double-click on the smitfraud.reg file on your desktop and when it asks if you would like to merge the data, click on the Yes button.

Reboot your computer and you should now be able to change your desktop settings back to how you would like it. If your desktop still looks strange, go into your display properties and click on the Themes tab. Change the theme to Windows XP and you will now be using the default Windows XP settings. Then change them as you see fit.

Reboot and post a new hijackthis log and let me know of any problems you experienced.

Your log is clean!

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

1. Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and reenable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point left over from what we have just cleaned.

2. Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
   1. From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
   2. Click once on the Security tab
   3. Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
   4. Click once on the Custom Level button.
      1. Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
         
      2. Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
         
      3. Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
         
      4. Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
         
      5. Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
         
      6. Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
         
      7. When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
         
      8. If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
   5. Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
   
   
3. Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

4. Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
   
   
5. Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

6. Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
   
   
7. Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

8. Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.

9. Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

10. Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.
