Difficulty downloading Service Pack 2

I'm having a problem downloading Service Pack 2 to my system (XP). It starts alright, scans the system, gets ready, starts downloading, and then about a third of the way through (as far as I can ascertain), a message comes up saying simply 'access denied'. When I clicked the OK, the process went into reverse and everything that had been downloaded was de-installed. I couldn't find any explanation for the problem.
