Advice for a Newbe…..

edited May 2005 in Hardware
Hey guys ,
I’m currently a Mac user so bare with me…….
I’m trying to put together a gaming machine, yeah I know just like everybody else. Anyway. What I’ve got in mind at the mo is

FATAL1TY AN8 NVIDIA NF4 Ultra Chipset
AMD Athlon 64 3500
ATI Radeon X800 PRO 256MB
1GB DDR Ram
Maxtor 80GB 5400rpm
(already got screen keyboard mouse......ect)

Any ideas on a appropriate case and power supply??
I would like to get the most I can out of it with out over clocking it to a point at which it will die on me.

Any input would be awesome.

Hamish

    how much is that processor?
    don't skimp on the ram quality/speed
    get the xl not the pro
    fatality is overated when you can get an AN8 and put the extra cash where it's more useful.

    If I built this system this the way I would put it together so it's only my opinion.

    I would put it into a decent lian li case with good air cooling and at least a 480w antec or ocz psu. Those are just the brands that come to mind off the top but I'd probably go that route personally.

    an8 = $135
    fatality = $185

    3500+ venice core = $272

    800xl = $270

    ocz dual channel gold 2-2-2-8 = $159

    Hey there,
    First of all thanks for the quick reply.
    The processor is a 2.2Ghz.
    Asuming that I got the AN8 like you said, any suggestions on better ram??

    Personaly I would change that abit to a dfi or asus.What ever ram that is to some ocz ram.The maxtor to a western digital. Then throw it into a nice lian-li case :cool: .And a pc power and cooling (if you wana spend 2x as much), Antec or ocz psu.

    Edit: I keep trying to submit that for 15min and keep getting a short-media not found ;D

    How do you feel about this processor?
    As for ram I prefer tight timings such as the 2-2-2-8 as I mentioned above. There is also the mushkin brand and corsair but when I did the newegg search this one came up first price wise. I'll look some more and see what I can dig up.

    I found this pc4000 2-2-2 which looks good at $255 mushkin

    pc4000 2-2-2 ocz = $259

    the difference between pc3200 and pc4000 is 400mhz vs 500mhz

    yeah I think that the processor is the right one for me, and in my price range, as for that newegg store unfortunately I live in New Zealand. Newegg does not ship to NZ, so this restricts me to my local stores and ebay………

    What would be the advantage of getting another brand over ABIT?

    Thanks again

    as for the case ...I think you'd be very satisfied with the lian li v1000 plus or better.
    abit is a good choice imo.

    you may also want to research the new x2 processors ...they are rated as the best performances and the prices aren't too bad either. You'd probably pay an extra $100.

    DFI or MSI for the mobo here.
    TCCD or VX based memory is the way to go.
    Chris is dead on w/ the X800XL over the Pro.
    Get a 500W or higher PSU w/ at least 2 12v rails (totaling over 30) and 24 pin connector.

    teh old goat
