8 GB DDR2 Memory Modules On The Way

edited May 2005 in Science & Tech
Infineon recently announced that it was sampling 8 GB DDR2 memory modules, each running at a humble 400MHz.
But don't get too excited yet; the technology is here, but the economies of scale haven't quite made their way here yet. The 8 GB modules are made by stacking 36 2 Gbit DDR2 RAM elements, a process that is not very cheap. While pricing information was not very specific, Infineon lists its 4 GB modules based on the same dual-die technology at US$3,900 per module; certainly we can expect the 8 GB modules to carry a nice premium compared to that. So, before you get ready to install 32 GB of memory in your computer, better get the checkbook ready.
