HSA almost gone, need help with one more thing

Hello, I've been having problems with the HSA and search extender programs on my computer. I've run Ad-Aware, Spybot, Spysubtract, and CWshredder multiple times in both regular mode and safe mode with no success (although combining these programs with manually deleting exe. files I knew to be created by these programs did at one time appear to succesfully remove HSA and SE, that is untill I rebooted and then I was back to square one). No matter how many bad exe. files I delete, new ones are created (they're always in the windows or system32 folder; also many of the exe. files created have an identical exe. file created at the same time in the prefetch folder). With some of the bad exe. files I have to go into the task manager and end the process tree first before I can delete it. The problems I am encountering due to these spyware being on my pc are: constant popups while on the internet, homepage being changed to about blank (which brings up some search site) no matter how many times I change it, various websites being added to my internet favorites section offering everythhing from remortgaging my house to free porn to programs I can buy to get rid of my spyware problem (like giving somebody a disease so you can sell them the cure  )-I can delete these sites from my favorites and they will reappear soon after. In my icon tray, there is an icon that creates a grey window saying (windows has detected a security risk on your computer, click here if you want to fix it - of course this just directs you to an internet site selling some spyware removal program). Also, under add/delete programs there is HSA and SE programs listed, but I am unable to uninstall them. Also, If I reboot or log off, when I log on to windows again a bunch of grey windows pop up saying it cannot find various exe. files, usually all of the HSA files that I had deleted before I logged off or rebooted. At any given time there is atleast two exe. files that I know to be HSA listed in the running processes. In this particular HJT log, I know for a fact that appjm32.exe and apifk.exe are HSA files, but I'm not sure about the others. I've checked them all under search to see if they are being run by legitimate programs and most of them are. Just so you know ahead of time, if I were to delete these two exe. files, new ones would be created almost immediately (I've tried it many, many times). Thanks for your help. I hope I didn't provide too much info. I'm sure much of this fits the classic pattern, so I've probably provided more info then was needed. Thanks for your help!

You are following the right steps, just probably not in the right order. The reason this infection can be difficult to remove is because it locates itself in five places with numerous files. These files check for each other and if a partner file is found missing they reinstall the entire infection. So if you don't get it all at once, you don't get it at all.

Please download CWShredder but don't run it yet.

    Download Ad-aware SE 1.05
Install the program and launch it. First, in the main window, look in the bottom right corner and click on Check for updates now and download the latest reference files. Exit Adaware for now.

Make sure that you can VIEW ALL HIDDEN FILES.

Run Hijackthis again, click scan, and Put a checkmark next to each of these. Then close all other windows--you should only see HijackThis on your Desktop--and click the Fix Checked button.

    Delete temp files

Navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Navigate to the C:\Windows\Prefetch folder. Open the Prefetch folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Prefetch folder.

Go to Start > Run and type %temp% in the Run box. The Temp folder will open. Click Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Finally go to Control Panel > Internet Options. On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files". Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK. Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then OK.

    Empty the Recycle Bin.

Run a full scan with Adaware.

Reboot your computer to go back to normal mode and post a new log.

Hi there, thank you for your help. I followed your instructions and here is my new HJT log. One thing.....when I booted into safe mode, some of the exe. files were missing or had renamed themselves, so I just figured out on my own which exe. files in windows and system32 were HSA in addition to the ones you listed to delete. Here is the new HJT scan; let me know what I need to do next. Thanks!

Good recognition on the filenames. This infection can change the filenames every time you reboot or use IE, so you did the right thing. Still a couple lines left.

Place a checkmark next to these entries, close all browsers and windows, and have HijackThis fix them by clicking Fix Checked:

    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page =
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\lstaz.dll/sp.html#28129
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
    O23 - Service: Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Helper ( 11Fßä#·ºÄÖ`I) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\ipwx.exe (file missing)

Reboot and post a new hijackthis log.

OK....a couple of things. I did what you instructed, but when I ran HJT again to fix, this one was no longer there:

    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\lstaz.dll/sp.html#28129

I'm not sure why it didn't show up this time. Just after posting my last HJT log, I did notice that there were still bad sites listed in my favorites, so I deleted them. Not sure if that has anything to do with it, but I thought I would mention it. Also, unlike before, this time when I deleted the sites from my favorites, they stayed gone. Also, no more pop-ups or annoying little icons in my icon tray, so I'm pretty happy right now :D . HSA and searchextender, however, are still listed under add/delete programs. Anyway, here is my new HJT log. I tried a few times, but I can't seem to fix this one:

I just realized that I did not reboot after the last fix (I missed that part of the instructions :D ). However, the HJT log is basically the exact same after scanning after reboot. This one is still showing up:

    O23 - Service: Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Helper ( 11Fßä#·ºÄÖ`I) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\ipwx.exe (file missing)

Here is the full HJT log (basically identical to the one prior to rebooting). Thanks for the help!

Hi there, I had HSA and Searchextender downloaded to my computer recently, but have almost removed it completely. I posted a HJT log and buckeye sam was very helpful and told me how to fix the problem. His last instructions were to fix three entries left over in my new HJT log, which I did; however, one of the entries is still showing up in HJT, and I need some advice on what to do about it. I've tried fixing it and rebooting several times now with no success. If you need to know anything about the history of my removal process, see this thread: http://www.short-media.com/forum/showthread.php?t=31915. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Here is the entry I'm having trouble getting rid of:

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode

    Click Start -> Run -> (type) services.msc

Scroll down and find the service called Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Helper When you find it, double-click on it. In the next window that opens, click the Stop button, then click on properties and under the General Tab, change the Startup Type to Disabled. Now hit Apply and then Ok and close any open windows.

Run Hijackthis and click on Open the Misc Tools section -> Delete an NT Service
Copy and paste this into the text box and click OK.

Reboot and post a new hijackthis log.

Okay, I booted into safe mode and opened the RPC Helper, but I could not press the stop button. Their was a stop button option, but the only button that was available to press was the start button, so I was not able to complete that step. I was able to change the startup type to disabled though. However, when I ran hijackthis to delete an NT service and pasted the appropriate text, I got a message that said "service was not found in the registry. make sure you entered the short name of the service, vbExclamation". I tried a couple more times, but no luck.

When I rebooted and ran HJT, this wasn't showing up anymore (O23 - Service: Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Helper ( 11Fßä#·ºÄÖ`I) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\ipwx.exe (file missing)

I'm guessing thats a good sign, but let me know if its ok that I had to skip two of the steps in your instructions. Thanks for all the help, it is much appreciated.

Here is the log after I rebooted

Good job! Your log is clean.

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
    1. Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and reenable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point left over from what we have just cleaned.

You can find instructions on how to enable and reenable system restore here:

      Managing Windows Millenium System Restore

      or

      Windows XP System Restore Guide

Renable system restore with instructions from tutorial above

    2. Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
      1. From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
      2. Click once on the Security tab
      3. Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
      4. Click once on the Custom Level button.
        1. Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
        2. Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
        3. Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
        4. Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
        5. Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
        6. Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
        7. When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
        8. If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
      5. Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

    3. Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

See this link for a listing of some online & their stand-alone antivirus programs:

Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources

    4. Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

    5. Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

      Understanding and Using Firewalls

    6. Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

    7. Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers

    8. Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Ad-aware to remove Spyware, Malware, & Hijackers from Your Computer

    9. Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

    10. Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.
