I have apparently been hijacked by a spyware and need help to purge my system of it. This it the log from HijackThis:

I did not understand the instructions from Spyware Shooter to Dan P. on what specific lines to "fix" and how to do it nor did I understand what specific files to search for and delete. Please help. Thanks

    Print out these instructions and then close all windows including Internet Explorer.

    Then I want you to fix some of those entries. Please do the following:

    Go to Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs and remove the following programs, if found:

    Security IGuard
    Virtual Maid
    Search Maid

    Exit Add/Remove Programs.


    Make sure that you can VIEW ALL HIDDEN FILES.

    Run Hijackthis again, click scan, and Put a checkmark next to each of these. Then click the Fix button:

    Reboot your computer into SAFE MODE

    Then delete these files or directories (Do not be concerned if they do not exist)

    Delete temp files

    Navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

    Navigate to the C:\Windows\Prefetch folder. Open the Prefetch folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Prefetch folder.

    Go to Start > Run and type %temp% in the Run box. The Temp folder will open. Click Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

    Finally go to Control Panel > Internet Options. On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files". Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK. Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then OK.

    Empty the Recycle Bin.


    Reboot your computer to go back to normal mode.

    You have another infection that will take a special tool to remove, but I want to make sure that smitfraud is gone first. Please post a new hijackthis log.

    Buckeye-Sam,

    Thanks for the response back in May. The system I have been working with is my father's and I have been unavailable for some time so have just gotten back to finish the repairs you helped with. The system now operates normally except for the following:

    ** Black Screen: very limited display properties
    ** No Cable-Modem internet outgoing service: Invalid Syntax Error on Explorer window title and Page Could Not Be Displayed etc etc on window body. It has a message about going to letgohome.com and then attempt to open the page for which I am looking. Internet service to/from ISP working from their end and Pop-Up windows come in but no ability to get out from system. Consequently no email, for which my father is most upset, but understanding. He is 76 and not particularly computer literate but like email.

    I have attached the latest logfile from Hijackthis. I hope you can help. I eagerly await your reply.

    Welcome back! :)

    Download L2mfix from one of these two locations:

    http://www.atribune.org/downloads/l2mfix.exe
    http://www.downloads.subratam.org/l2mfix.exe

    Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

    IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

    Download smitRem.zip and save the file to your desktop.
    Right click on the file and extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.



    Please make sure that you can VIEW ALL HIDDEN FILES.

    Place a checkmark next to these entries, close all browsers and windows, and have HijackThis fix them by clicking Fix Checked:

    Reboot your computer into SAFE MODE

    Then delete these files or directories (Do not be concerned if they do not exist):

    Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
    Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

    The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log in your next reply.




    Reboot your computer to go back to normal mode.



    Enter your control panel and double click on Network Connections. Then right click on your default connection, usually local area connection for cable and dsl, and left click on properties. Double-click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item and select the radio dial that says Obtain DNS servers automatically

    Press OK twice to get out of the properties screen and reboot if it asks.



    Please post a new hijackthis log and the log from the smitrem tool(smitfiles.txt).

    Thanks for your patience. I got an error when I ran the Hijackthis program. It read:

    an unexpected error has occurred @ procedure: modbackup_makebackup (sitem=O20-app init_dlls:pu171p22u4gm.dll

    I did the fixes for the internet connection and for the display properties; both worked fine. However, I still have a problem with IE as I can not change my homepage from the Google homepage.
