Please help trojan-spy.html.smitfraud.c
Hello, I've been trying to get rid of the trojan-spy.html.smitfraud.c virus for a week. I've found post that have had instructions, but they either do not work or the virus has something in place that blocks me from downloading a file (reglite for example). I've run spybot, ad-adware, norton anitvirus all with the latest updated, but have not been able to correct it. It also changes my IE page to IPAssist.biz every time I open IE. At this point, I am at a loss. I've done a search in this forum and it seems that there isn't a common set of instructions to remove this, so I'm posting my log below. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
dagobin

Thank you for helping me! I was able to find the majority of the things listed in your post. However, after I rebooted into normal mode, a lot of them came back (R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://ipassist.biz/ for example). Also when I rebooted, I received a message " Can't find the file 'C:\WINNT\System32\Spoolsrv32.exe' (or one of its components). Make sure the path and filename are correct and that all required libraries are available." Lastly, i'm not sure if this means anything, the page that my IE gets pushed to has also changed from "http://ipassist.biz/free.php" to "http://clicksearchclick.com/". I've attached the log below. Once again thank you for your help.

Step 1
Download CWShredder but don't run it yet.
Step 2
Download Ad-aware SE 1.05
Install the program and launch it. First, in the main window, look in the bottom right corner and click on Check for updates now and download the latest reference files. Exit Adaware for now.
Step 3
Make sure that you can VIEW ALL HIDDEN FILES.
Step 4
Run Hijackthis again, click scan, and Put a checkmark next to each of these. Then close all other windows--you should only see HijackThis on your Desktop--and click the Fix Checked button.

Step 5
Reboot your computer into SAFE MODE
Step 6
Now run CWShredder, making sure to click "Fix".
Step 7
Then delete these files or directories (Do not be concerned if they do not exist)
c:\winnt\system32\winserver.exe
C:\WINNT\system32\Services\{D942270B-3325-403C-A5CD-FA96A665B541}
Step 8
Run a full scan with Adaware.
Reboot your computer to go back to normal mode.
Please run at least two of these online scans.
Make sure they are set to clean automatically:
Panda Virus Scan
Bit Defender
TrendMicro Housecall
There will be files that these scans will not remove. Please include that information in your next post.
Reboot and post a new hijackthis log and the info from your virus scans.
Thank you for your help. I ran the CWShredder and it did not find anything. The Adware scan found 13 Cool Web items that I deleted. I started running the virus scans and my Norton displayed some download.trojan virus messages. The defaul IE page now gets pushed to http:///. Below are the files from each of the virus scans that could not be deleted. I've also attached the hijack files. Once again, thank you for your help.

Hello Buckeye_Sam,
I was able to delete all of the files. I deleted the Services folder for the C:\Winnt\System32\Services entry. There was a Services file, but couldn't delete it. Also, there was another file called "c:\sys1224110713" that was not in the list. Should I delete it. Also, the default page went to http:///, but seems to be okay since I set it to default. I'll give it some time. I am attaching the hijackthis log below.
Thank you for your help

Your log looks clean.
Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
- Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and reenable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point left over from what we have just cleaned.
- Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
- From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
- Click once on the Security tab
- Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
- Click once on the Custom Level button.
- Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
- Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
- Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
- Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
- Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
- Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
- When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
- If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
- Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
- Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.
- Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
- Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.
- Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
- Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.
- Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.
- Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.
- Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically. You can find instructions on how to enable and reenable system restore here:

Thank you for your help, unfortunately, my virus software (norton) is still popping up with a download.trojan virus every time I try to change my background. It says the desktop.html page has the download.trojan and cannot be accessed or repaired. I cannot access any of my active desktop settings. The screen switches to a grey screen when I right click on the screen to get to the active desktop and then goes back to white after I move the mouse off of the desktop. Any thoughts? I've attached my hijackthis log. If you need any additional info, please let me know
Thanks,
dagobin

Once it has downloaded, double-click on the smitfraud.reg file on your desktop and when it asks if you would like to merge the data, click on the Yes button.
Reboot your computer and you should now be able to change your desktop settings back to how you would like it.
Let me know if this does the trick.
Didn't work. I still cannot access my active desktop when I right click on the desktop. I don't even get an option for the active desktop when I right click. I also tried to change it from the display and still no luck. The desktop shows up when I start and end windows, just not when I'm using it. It turns gray when I mouse over the desktop and turns white when the mouse moves off of the desktop. Ran Norton, Adware, Spybot, and Spyblaster, and they did not find anyting. Any thoughts? Please let me know if you need any addtional info.
Thanks,
dagobin.
http://www.silentrunners.org/Silent%20Runners.zip
Unzip it to the desktop and double-click on it. If you get any kind of warning message about scripts, please choose to allow the script to run. When the scan is finished, a message will pop up and a logfile will have been created on the desktop. Please post the entire contents of this logfile for me to see.
Here is the log from SilentRunners. I was also wondering if this problem has anything to do with the desktop.html file that I deleted. It had the download.trojan virus. If so, could I just replace it with a desktop.html file from another computer runnning 2000? Just a thought. Please let me know if you need any additional info.
Thank you for your help,
dagobin
