Winamp is cool, but last time I used it I was in Highschool and it was v2 or something.
But I voted for WMP9 simply becuase it sounds great to me, has the settings I use or KNOW HOW TO use :P Just don't want to have something that shows up in my taskbar and I don't wanna install something that does everything that I already have.
Gentlemen,
I can't say much on multimedia all in one players though I am interested in foobar but haven't gotten around to it. As far as a dedicated MP3 player I must endorse:
Telos Audioactive Player for MP3. I would implore you to listen to mp3's on your player and then on this one(BTW it's free). As far as sound quality I believe there is a noticeble difference.
I've tried a few standalone MP3 players and for one reason or another they irritated me. But not this one. First I think it sounds better than any other non DAW MP3 player (Cool Edit Pro sounds better but you have to wait for each file to be "slowly" loaded). There is no browser funnystuff. It uses Fraunhofer MPEG decoding algorithms and that can't be bad (they invented MP3). and it's FREE!
These guys (Telos) make MP3 Stuff including hardware encoders. They have a few other free MP3 Utilities on the page as well.
Advice: Install, copy aaplay32 and aaPlayEdit and put them in a seperate folder. Then uninstall the program to get rid of reg entries and url menu files/links (unless you want them). You can use the two saved programs without a problem. One is the player and one is a playlist editor.
Its an encoding audio format basically the same as MP3, programs available on most platforms, though moreso on Linux as everything with a GPL seems to start in Linux (i.e. You can get an OGG Shoutcast server for Linux but not Windows).
WinAMP plays it, WMP will if you grab a codec (it may even download one automatically).
OGG unlike MPEG is entirely free so anyone can use it for anything, without any licencing fees. So its really better in every way.
Here is an example, the song is 5:46 and encoded using option 0 (goes from -1 to +9 or you can set it manually). I think for the filesize it is excetionally good quality, not something I would keep it in, but for portable devices it is perfect. But, just use a higher quality for qudio you want to keep (unless you are going to go lossless, in that case use Monkeys).
You get roughly 50 songs to 90MB in this format and quality (keep in mind that some of these songs are 6mins or so).
I use WMP9. It may be a memory hog, but I don't play MP3s while I'm playing a game (and I've got 1 Gig of RAM in my main PC), my home entertainment system is 4 feet from my pc, so I can just slap in a CD. Winamp is good, but I'm sick of installing a whole host of crap just to get a fully functioning system; WMP9 since it's basically part of Windows (Update) is just one less thing to install.
Theres also oggdrop, just a simple drag and drop encoder once you set the output to what you want, although not good for doing lots of files at a time its nice and small as its just dedicated to wav-ogg

Ugh... don't do more than one file at a time with this program! It always crashed on me and I had to start over. If not for this problem it would be great. When I got fed up enough I switched to a similar command-line program.
Both work well with standard CD files. But they do not handle high resolution audio (32bit float/96Khz). Most encoders are looking for a CD .wav type stream (16bit/44.1KHz) or 16bit/48KHz at best.
I find that Cool Edit pro can create (32bit float/96Khz) to MP3 in one step without needing to first dither the .wav to 16bit/44.1KHz before mp3 encoding. Basically saving an extra step and degrading the sound one generation. But Cool Edit does not support .ogg files :banghead:
However, it has come to my attention that Sonic Foundry sound forge 6.0 does support .ogg and so 32bit/96KHz files can be encoded in one step
The better quality in Hi-resolution audio files to (.mp3, .ogg) is very noticeble when encoded in one step as opposed to two. This is all academic but may be of intrest to people who want to rip DVD-Video 24bit/48Khz .wav audio or DVD-A 24bit/96Khz .wav audio to .mp3 or .ogg in the future.

OGG still sounds better though

Correct me if I'm wrong, Ogg is a linux app? Multimedia? mp3?
Can it be wrapped in windows or is there an ogg player for windows?
I really should know this.

Dire Straits - Sultans of Swing
(I did attach the file but after waiting the whole time for it to upload, it decided to pretend I just never uploaded it )
