I realize that we have already been through all of this, but I think I have discovered the culprit program in my computer. Everything was fine...HSA/SW/SE were all gone until my husband ran a game called Snoods that has been on the computer for some time, but seldom played. It was a game my son sent me via the internet (I won't make that mistake again)
I have deleted the game/folders/extensions.
Ran Adaware, spybot s&d, and about buster.

I have previously posted, but no answer yet, but I have a new problem and don't know if it is connected to a trojan, virus or some other problem.
When I tried to shut down and restart my computer this morning. It would NOT let me start in normal mode, and perhaps this should be posted elsewhere I'm not sure.
The start page told me that there is an error in the WiniSystem (?)
I have run a new HJL to see if anyone can help me.
I don't know how I got this back to normal mode, which it is in now, but the background is all kinds of screwy.

Reboot and post a new hijackthis log. Try to get the exact message that you get when you reboot and include that info with your next post.

This whole thing is giving me heart failure. Each time I have to restart I'm afraid that I won't get it to boot up again.
Ok....here is the message I get on reboot....

Cannot find a device file that may be needed to run Windows or a windows application.
The Windows registry or SYSTEM.INI file refers to this device file, but the device file no longer exists.
If you deleted this file on purpose, try uninstalling the associated application using its uninstall or setup program.
If you still want to use the application associated with this device file, try reinstalling that application to replace the missing file.

Now I get the same message in duplicate followed by

I press a key, nothing happens, it locks up and I have to manually restart, can only go through safe mode at this point or I am redirected to the above messages all over again. Safe mode however will not allow access to the internet/no usb light. so next I go to
Start/shut down/restart which will bring me back to Normal mode.


I sure hope you all are able to help, I no nothing about wiping a drive and restarting everything, and since this is Win98 there is no such thing as system restore and of course there is no back ups here....I will fix that ASAP

First let me tell you that your log is clean.

Secondly, Viagart.vxd is a device driver for your video card. You can download a new driver from here.

Or if you have a disc just reinstall the driver.

That should take care of your problem. Let me know how it goes.

Alright, reinstalled driver for the video card. Held my breath as I rebooted.
Some of the same message as before regarding missing information...well here this is exactly what it says on reboot.

Cannot find a device file that may be needed to run Windows or a Windows application.
The Windows registry or SYSTEM.INI file refers to this device file, but the device is no longer there.
If you deleted on purpose...blah..blah...blah as before.

This is still the issue (I guess)

what the heck is the vshinit..other than a royal pain in my butt. I just want to be able to start my computer without all the ugly messages.

I do appreciate all your help, hope we can resolve this soon...I don't know if it interferes with my ability to fold.

Ok...found the answer to that one on my own
the vshinit.vxd had to do with McAfee, which I used to have on this pc, until I installed NAV, which I thought was better
So in the event that anyone is interested, I opened my msn link (which I hate to do, would much rather use Mozilla/Firefox) and reinstalled McAfee from their packaged site (MSn is now bundled with McAfee) and that took care of the nasty message....
Anyway, throughout all of the mess that I apparently created by letting HSA into my computer, it totally destroyed/corrupted my NAV and I can't find my disc to reinstall so I will just use the free McAfee until I can purchase NAV 2006.
Thank you for all your help, with any luck there won't be any more issues with this computer for a while
