Working with Half Life 2 Demos

After seeing this video (http://www.machinima.org/paul_blog/2005/03/machinima-wiki-and-finally-music-video.html it's awesome) I've been trying to mess with Half Life 2 demos and stuff because I want to try to put together a little video. I know I can't do anything as awesome as that one but I thought it would be fun to put something together.

I know how to record demos in HL and remove the HUD and stuff, but, is there anyway to convert the .dem files to avi or some other form that would be editable in a standard video editing program or is there a command in HL2 to convert the demo or record it in a different format?

    I'm almost positive everyone who does that either distributes the .dem, or records using FRAPS. The HUD is removable through a console command, but you'll have to Google it cause I can't remember what it is.
