Quicknavigate.com problem - trying hard, and failing miserably, to remove -- TomH
HI:
I've really tried NOT to have to post a log and hassle everyone. I have Symantec AV, SpyBot SD, AdAware, and HJT, and have run them all. I've followed the general instructions (i.e. going to safe mode, fixing/removing bad files, etc.), but no luck so far. Been at this for a couple of days now.
The general symptoms seem to be the common ones:
-Background image replaced with a fake windows message
-IE home page resets/redirects to quicknavigate.com
-Fake popups from taskbar prompting to buy anti-spyware software (ironic, no?)
-general slowness
-random IE popups popping up (gambling sites, etc.) periodically.
Running Win Xp on a Dell laptop. Would really appreciate any help anyone could offer.

Best Regards. Any help muchly appreciated.

Fix those entries then find and delete the following files:
msmsgs.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\hp8854.tmp
C:\WINDOWS\System32\winxp.exe
Then reboot your computer and post a new log.
Thanks for the response. I followed the instructions:
1. Ran HJT and fixed all entries from list above.
2. Searched on msmsgs.exe; found 4 files. Deleted three. Fourth was not removable--it's located in C:\I386\MMSSETUP.CAB.
3. Searched for both C:\WINDOWS\System32\hp8854.tmp and C:\WINDOWS\System32\winxp.exe, but neither seemed to be in the folder. I did find a similar file called Hp856f.tmp, but since it wasn't the exact same name, didn't delete that one.
4. Rebooted in regular mode.
5. Ran HTJ again.
Seems I missed it somehow. Here's the new log:

Still in Safe Mode, find and delete these files:
C:\WINDOWS\System32\hp7EC8.tmp
C:\WINDOWS\System32\msmsgs.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\msole32.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\shnlog.exe
C:\WINDOWS\popuper.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\intmonp.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\intmon.exe
Then reboot your computer and post a new log.
Making progress for the first time in three days! Followed the steps in the last response:
1. Rebooted machine into safe mode.
2. Ran HTJ and fixed all files indicated.
3. Looked for files directly:
C:\WINDOWS\System32\hp7EC8.tmp - did not find
C:\WINDOWS\System32\msmsgs.exe - did not find
C:\WINDOWS\System32\msole32.exe - deleted
C:\WINDOWS\System32\shnlog.exe - deleted this file, and one more from 'prefetch' with a longer name.
C:\WINDOWS\popuper.exe -deleted
C:\WINDOWS\System32\intmonp.exe - deleted
C:\WINDOWS\System32\intmon.exe -deleted
4. Rebooted machine into regular mode.
Redirects to quicknavigate.com are now gone.Random popups and fake warnings seem to be gone too! Fantastic. Only symptom I still notice is not being able to set the desktop background image.
Here's the new HTJ log:

Thanks much. This is fantastic. Is there anything else I need to do to wrap this up? Anyway to fix the desktop image?
Regardless, I much appreciate your time and help. Never would have been able to do this without your assistance.
Regards,
Tom
