Spyware / Virus killed TCP/IP and internet
Hi thanks for reading.
I have a HP laptop I'm working on for someone that had/has virus and spyware infection. I removed a bunch but I can't seem to get the TCP/IP working correctly.
I'd like to run a few more scans, but I still can't seem to get the internet connectivity or networking working again to update definitions.
The computer is only about 2 months old Windows XP SP2 Home, teenage son had Limewire, Kazza, and other P2P sharing programs on it. Anyway....
The computer can ping out to IP addresses and DNS names on the internet.
The laptop can Ping 127.0.0.1
The laptop can Ping the Gateway and other computers on the LAN
The laptop cannot Ping itself
Other computers on the network cannot Ping the laptop
Internet Explorer gives a "Cannot find Server or DNS error"
Firefox gives this error "Connection was refused when attempting to contact ....." error
I removed HotBar, all the P2P programs and a bunch of other junk via the Control Panel/Add Remove Programs
Scanned with a somewhat outdated Spybot S&D, current Norton Antivirus, a current Spy Sweeper, and HiJack This 1.99.1
I've run Winsockxpfix a few times (no help)
I checked the hosts file its not been modified
I ran ipconfig /flushdns
What else should I try? Thanks so much,
