Big Problem

I can only start my computer in safe mode. From the beginning: my daughter was printing a picture she had saved in Word and my computer shut down in the middle of the task (my Toshiba laptop has a tendency to overheat). When she tried to restart the computer she could get to the user log-in screen but after she clicked on her name nothing happened (XP Home). The same thing happens when I try to log in, it says 'loading my personal settings' but never gets to my desktop. I did a system restore to 2 days before this problem but that didn't help. Before this problem I was having issues with something called 'pop64' running at start-up and also a pop-up 'aurora' when I was on the internet. I don't know where to begin with this. Not sure if I have a virus or if the issue has to do with Word somehow being corrupt but I'm not sure how that would prevent me from starting the computer in regular mode while safe mode is OK. I printed out a hijackthis file to see if maybe an answer lies there:

The description that you gave of your problem could indicate a number of things, some of which could require that you reinstall Windows. But I always consider that a last resort, so let's see what can be done.

Make sure that you can VIEW ALL HIDDEN FILES.

Place a checkmark next to these entries, close all browsers and windows, and have HijackThis fix them by clicking Fix Checked:

    F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe
    O2 - BHO: Band Class - {01F44A8A-8C97-4325-A378-76E68DC4AB2E} - C:\WINDOWS\systb.dll
    O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {2CDE1A7D-A478-4291-BF31-E1B4C16F92EB} - (no file)
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [seeve] C:\WINDOWS\seeve.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [motoin] C:\WINDOWS\mm15201518.Stub.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Internet Optimizer] "C:\Program Files\Internet Optimizer\optimize.exe"
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Win Server Updt] C:\WINDOWS\wupdt.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [eirljg] c:\windows\system32\swemat.exe
    O15 - Trusted Zone: *.media-motor.net
    O15 - Trusted Zone: *.popuppers.com
    O23 - Service: System Startup Service (SvcProc) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\svcproc.exe

Then delete these files or directories (Do not be concerned if they do not exist):

    C:\WINDOWS\svcproc.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\wupdt.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\seeve.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\systb.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\mm15201518.Stub.exe
    c:\windows\system32\swemat.exe

Reboot your computer and post a new log. I see signs of both Norton and Mcafee in your log. Are you running both of these programs as an antivirus?

As always thanks for your help Buckeye. To answer your question, I run Norton antivirus and McAfee firewall. Well, the problems seem to have gotten worse (I didn't think that was possible). I can still only log-in in safe mode but now I am unable to access the internet. I ran hijack this and fixed the items you said and deleted the files I could find. I had a problem with nail.exe though. I would delete it and 5 seconds later it would reappear. I zapped it with Ewido and it reappeared. It still shows up in my hijackthis log. My search function no longer works and other capabilities seem to be dropping off. In order for me to show you the new hijackthis log I need to get a CD, copy the log to it, and then open it on my son's computer (which I am currently using). Without internet access my laptop is useless. Is it time for the nuclear option? Thanks again.

Try loggin in to Safe mode with Networking to see if that will allow you to access the Internet.

I've been using the safe mode with networking. Was able to access the internet until yesterday but now when I open my browser I just get a message 'unable to display page'. It was working Friday afternoon when I left for work and Saturday morning it wasn't working.

    Try this:

Click Start -> Run, (type) cmd, and then (type) ipconfig /flushdns

If that doesn't help download WinsockFix and run it.
