HSA Removal problem

Hey guys, I'm new, I think it's great what you guys are doing for all the computer illeterate people who need help removing annoying software.

Anyways, I have a problem now, I managed to remove HSA, SE, SW from my computer completly last night (whoo!) but now I have a problem because none of my downloads or installers will work. I wondering if this is a consequence of the removal or is it something else?

The problem with my downloads is that they won't start at all (I use IE 6) et with the installer, well I tried to install directx 9.0c, but it skips me directly to the install complete screen without installing any files.

Maybe I'm posting this in the wrong section, but any help would be appreciated!

First of all, you haven't completely removed HSA.

Place a checkmark next to these entries, close all browsers and windows, and have HijackThis fix them by clicking Fix Checked:

    Click Start -> Run -> (type) services.msc

Scroll down and find the service called Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Helper When you find it, double-click on it. In the next window that opens, click the Stop button, then click on properties and under the General Tab, change the Startup Type to Disabled. Now hit Apply and then Ok and close any open windows.

Run Hijackthis and click on Open the Misc Tools section -> Delete an NT Service
Copy and paste this into the text box and click OK.

    11Fßä#·ºÄÖ`I

Reboot and post a new hijackthis log. Let me know if you are still having the same trouble as you posted in your post.

    Hmmmm....that's a new one.

Forgive me for having you go through this, but I want to make sure I understand exactly what your problem is.

Right click on this link and select "Save Target as"

    http://downloads.stevengould.org/cleanup/CleanUp40.exe

What happens exactly? Do you get an error message?
  • edited May 2005
    It just says:

"Internet Explorer cannot download Cleanup40.exe from downloads.stevengould.org."
"Internet Explorer was not able to open this Internet site. The requested site is either unavailable or cannot be found. Please try again later."

First let's verify that it's a IE problem. Download and install Firefox to see if you have the same problem or not.

    http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/

Assuming it is just an IE problem here are some things you can try.

    1. Check the info on this page.
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=816868

    2. Visit PC Pitstop and run through their tests to adjust your browser settings. Maybe something is not set correctly.
    http://www.pcpitstop.com/pcpitstop/default.asp

    3. Repair IE

Well, I did fix my problem with downloads, but unfortunatly, I still can't install files like directx 9.0c.

This is a very strange problem indeed...

What happens when you try to install something? Do you get an error? What does it say?
  • edited May 2005
Well, when I try to install Directx 9.0c, I choose to accept the liscence agreement. When I click Next, it takes me to the installation completed screen, but no files have been installed.

Is it just Directx that you can't install? Are you running the installation through the browser or downloading the install file completely and running it alone?

    Can you install this program?
    http://downloads.stevengould.org/cleanup/CleanUp40.exe
  • edited May 2005
I can install CleanUp just fine, it seems to be only directx 9.0c that's affected.

Are you getting directx from Windows Update?

Try the instructions on this site.

I downloaded the file, but unfortunatly it still skips me to the completed screen.

I've tried from windows updates, from microsoft website, from a game and now from iamnotageek.com

I don't think there's anything else I can do for you. Since your only problem is with directx , your problem doesn't seem to be malware related.
