Dr Watson Postmortem debugger crash

edited November 2006 in Spyware & Virus Removal
Alright everyone.
I know there are a lot of different versions of this problem around, but I have had little joy following any other instructions so thought I'd post here.
Basically whenever I right click or attempt to delete files my computer crashes with the "Dr watson... has encountered a problem and needs to close" and then my machine freezes completely.
Here is my HJT logfile.

I know little about systems and that and didn't want to do anything rash.
I am running XP professional with SP2.

If anyone could help it would be hugely appreciated...

There's nothing really showing in your hijackthis log.

Please run at least two of these online scans.
Make sure they are set to clean automatically:

    Panda Virus Scan

    Bit Defender

    TrendMicro Housecall

There will be files that these scans will not remove. Please include that information in your next post.

Reboot and post a new hijackthis log and the info from your virus scans.

Cheers for that Mate, I am scanning with Panda scan now but Avast has said that I now have a virus that seems to have some from the Panda site.

    Win32:Kuang2
    Virus/Worm

It says I should abort. I will let it do its thing but this is pretty weird. I will post when I know more.

    Thanks again

Disable Avast while you do the online scans and you won't have them conflicting with each other like that.

Your log continues to look clean. You can disregard the BitDefender log, but the Panda log shows some files/folders that you should delete.

    C:\WINDOWS\System32\P2P Networking
    C:\Program Files\MyWay
    C:\WINDOWS\smdat32a.sys
C:\Documents and Settings\rhygin\Local Settings\Temp <-- delete everything in this folder, but not the folder itself.
    C:\WINDOWS\smdat32a.sys
    C:\WINDOWS\smdat32m.sys

Let me know if you are still having problems?

    Hi Buckeye.
Here lie a lot of problems.
One symptom of my Dr Watson issue is that I can't delete or even right click files without a full freeze.
I tried doing it in safe Mode but this seemed to just restart safe mode (showing the opening message) and never actually deleted the files.
Is there a way to get round this?
    Cheers

That's a new one on me.

    Let's take a closer look.

    Download rkfiles.zip
    http://skads.org/special/rkfiles.zip
Unzip the contents to a permanent folder.

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode

    Doubleclick rkfiles.bat
It will scan for a while, so please be patient.
Wait till the DOS window closes and reboot back to normal mode.

Post the contents of C:\log.txt in your next reply.

This log doesn't indicate any malware, but it does show that you have had problems. Let's try a little disc maintenance.

Click Start -> My Computer. Now right click on your local disc(your hard drive) and select Properties. Click on the Tools tab and next to Error Checking click Check Now. You may get a message that it has to run at the next restart. Click Ok and reboot your computer. Then go get a cup of coffee because it will probably take a while to run.

After it run go right back to the same place and click on Defragment Now. This will also take a while, especially if you haven't done it in a while.

Let me know how it goes and if it resulted in any difference for you.
  • edited June 2005
The error correct found a lot of stuff and corrected it, but deleting files is still impossible.
The drive didn't need defragging as I try to keep on top of things like this.
I am at a complete loss now.
Could something be physically damaged? I am actually in the middle of a crash right now, but able to use the web within this window.
Should I take it in somewhere to have it looked at?
    Cheers for your patience man.

I can tell you that your problem does not appear to be malware related. There are other scans we can run to completely rule that out if you want, but based off what you are telling me is happening it sounds like a hardware problem. It could be memory, or it could your hard drive. I'm not the best one to diagnose that for you.
  • edited June 2005
I would like to run the other scans if thats alright. I am pretty broke and would find it difficult to get it looked at. Also, everything else seems to run fine except for sonics "record now" the CD burning software which just displays a warning with just a red cross on it, no message, and an ok button. Ring any bells?

No, that doesn't sound familiar. Let's take a closer look and see if we can find anything.

    Please download DLLCompare from here:
    http://downloads.subratam.org/DllCompare.exe
Save it to the desktop and run it. Click "Run Locate.com" to scan for DLL files. When the scan is finished, click "Compare". Finally, when that is complete, click "Make a Log of What Was Found". Please post the entire contents of the logfile here for me.
  • edited June 2005
    Here's the log:

    * DLLCompare Log version(1.0.0.127)
Files Found that Windows does not See or cannot Access
*Not everything listed here means you are infected!

It's more your time than mine. It's up to you. But if you're up for it I'd like to see the results of one more scan.

    Download mwav.exe from MicroWorld, then:

    - Double-click the mwav.exe icon to run it (it'll self extract).
    - When it opens, check the following:
    ---- Memory
    ---- Registry
    ---- Startup Folders
    ---- System Folders
    ---- Services
    ---- Drive
    ---- All local drives
    ---- Scan all files

    - Then click on SCAN

When it completes, post back the results (copy and paste) from the 'Virus log information' pane.
  • edited June 2005
    Hi Buckeye.
I ran the scan and got the following log, but think I got the wrong info. I clicked view log instead. The whole log is about 1 500 000 words long so I can't post it. I am currently running it again, but it has been running for 2 days now and I need to shut down as I am currently moving. It may be a short time before I post again.

It found 15 viruses previously. I will post as soon as I can.

    Cheers

I am having the same problem. When I try to open My Computer, My Documents, My Network Places, or anything that has to use Windows Explorer to open it, my computer just sits there and does not do anything, It does not freeze but I am not able to do anything. I open up Windows Task Manager and see drwtsn32.exe, so I close that and explorer.exe crashes and restarts, It does the same thing everytime, it is a definite thing that the problem lies within Dr.Watson. I tried the steps above and did not help at all. Please help me! Thanks, you can also email me if you wish. Is it important to have drwtsn32.exe on your computer. what happens if you delete it?
