about:blank problem

Hello. As you can tell from my user id, I am technically challenged, so please excuse me if I haven't followed the protocol exactly. I did read the suggestions for posting a thread for help with a problem. I hope I got it right. If I didn't please let me know.

My internet browser keeps opening to something called trackhits.cc. The URL reads “about:blank”. I ran Adaware and Spybot. Adaware found three registry keys:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER:Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main”Start Page” (“about:blank”)
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE:Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main”Start Page” (“about:blank”)
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE:Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main”Default_Page_URL” (“about:blank”)

Adaware says that they have been deleted, but when I restart, it happens again. Upon starting, the browser automatically opens (never did that before).

Also, SpyBot brings up a file called DSO Exploit again and again, even though I correct the problem each time I run a scan.

Since neither AdAware nor Spybot could fix the problem, I ran Hijack This.
The HijackThis log is below. I would very much appreciate any help you can give me.

    You have a few things there that need removing...

    -

    Download CWShredder 2.14 from here. Run it and press the *fix,* not scan and allow it to clean the infection. Close all browser and explorer windows before hitting the fix button.

    -

    Download, unzip to your desktop About:Buster and run it, then:

    1. Click "Update".
    2. Click "Check For Update"

    (If no new version is available, skip to step #4.)

    3. Click "Download Update", and wait for it to be installed.
    4. Click "Start".

    (Wait for the initial ADS scan to complete.)

    5. Click "Yes", to shutdown any IE session currently open.

    (Wait for the about:blank scan to complete.)

    6. Click "Ok", to scan once more.
    7. Click "Yes", to shutdown any IE sessions currently open.
    8. Click "Yes", to begin the second pass.

    9. Click "Save log", and post this log back along with your new log.
    10. Click "Exit".
    11. Click "Exit".
    12. "Reboot"..

    ===============

    Run HiJackThis then:

    1. Click "Open the Misc Tools Section"
    2. Click "Open Process manager"

    -

    Next, while holding down the CTRL key, locate (if present) and click on (highlight) each of the following:

    C:\WINDOWS\syspq32.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\winrr.exe

    Now double-check and make sure that only those item(s) above are highlighted, then click "Kill process". Now, click "Refresh", check again, and repeat this step if any remain.

    ===============

    Still in HiJackThis, click "Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\joboy.dll/sp.html#58582

    Now, with all windows closed except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

    ===============

    Locate and delete the following item(s), if present. Make sure your able to view system and hidden files/ folders:

    files...

    You have a few things there that need removing...I reckon this will get it as there is now no reinstaller by the look :).

    Run HiJackThis, click "Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\hhcpy.dll/sp.html#37049
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\hhcpy.dll/sp.html#37049
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\hhcpy.dll/sp.html#37049

    R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

    O23 - Service: Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Helper ( 11Fßä#·ºÄÖ`I) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\system32\winrr.exe (file missing)

    Now, with all windows closed except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

    ===============

    Locate and delete the following item(s), if present. Make sure your able to view system and hidden files/ folders:

    files...

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\hhcpy.dll

    -

    Note that some of these file(s)/folder(s) may or may not be present. If present, and cannot be deleted because they're 'in use', try deleting them in "Safe Mode".

    It seems like we're almost there! Now when I boot, the browser still automatically opens, but it's opening to Google. Logfiles from the scans I ran are below. One other thing - when I shut down, I get an error message about program called GCMCMI32.exe. Any idea what that might be about? As always, thanks for your continued help.

    Scan with hijackthis and tick the boxes next to all the following entries, then close all browser and explorer windows and hit the "Fix checked" button.

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [iexplore.exe] C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe

    Reboot after hitting fix.

    A google search on GCMCMI32.exe fetches nothing. See if you can find the file and upload it to jhotti's. http://virusscan.jotti.org/

    Go here http://www.billsway.com/vbspage/ and download, unzip and run the Registry Search Tool. Type GCMCMI32.exe in the dialog box. Let it run and after a few minutes, a prompt will appear. Click OK to write the results to Notepad and post them here.

    The hijacker or whatever it was seems to be gone now and everything seems like it's back to normal. This is an unbelievable service that you guys provide. I am grateful for the help.

    As for GCMCMI32.EXE, Jotti found nothing. I did a search my hard drive and found that the file resides in c:\windows\preftech. Here is the post from Billsway.com:

    ; NOTE: This file will be deleted when you close WordPad.
    ; You must manually save this file to a new location if you want to refer to it again later.
    ; (If you save the file with a .reg extension, you can use it to restore any Registry changes you make to these values.)

    It may be a left over of some program you have/had. After those scans the liklelyhood is that the file is ok. If that is the only location on your pc for it, then I believe it will be safe to delete.
    If you right click on that file and go to 'properties' you will be able to find more information on it, such as manufacturer etc.
