With the release of their Opteron dual core processors back in April, and their corresponding announcement of the upcoming Athlon 64 X2 line of processors, AMD threw its hat officially into the dual core processor arena. And truth be told, AMD was much more prepared for the fight. Having been in the plans of the Athlon 64 since early on, adding a second core to the Athlon 64 turns out to be a much simpler and more elegant solution than what Intel has presented us thus far.

Summary Review
The Athlon X2 processors are based on the Rev E stepping of the Athlon 64 core and include the SSE3 instructions as well as mixed memory support and support for a full four DIMM slot configuration. There were some other changes that were made as well that allow the new 90nm X2 processor to run at a significantly lower power/performance ratio than previous Athlon 64 processors. In our conclusions page, you'll see that our X2 4400+ doesn't use much more power than our 4000+ processor, which is running at 200 MHz faster frequency.

    I wish they'd make some slower/cheaper dual core processors. It looks like I won't be seeing one of these for a long tme.

    If you consider that the X2 series outperforms a comparable Opteron 2xx Dual CPU system and that AMD has limited CPU making capacity (Compared to Intel) the prices of the X2 are right in line.
    Athlon X2 4400+ ($596) > Dual Opteron 248 (2x $445 = $890 ) (Both CPU/Cores are 2.2ghz 1MB Cache)
    Athlon X2 4800+ ($1018) > Dual opteron 250 (2x $669 = $1338) (Both CPU/Cores are 2.4ghz 1MB Cache)

    I know I for one will be selling my Dual MP 2800+ system along with my A64 3800+ and buying 2 of these bad boys right after they're in stock!

    These sond pretty good but I think I will wait ans see what IBM and the Cell is alall about before parting with my hard earn cash...

    Why would you do that?

    Cell is never being released for the PC. It was designed for the PS3, and nothing more.
