Please help with «hacktool.rootkit»... here is my HJT log
Hello again Short Media team
This is the 3rd time that I come to you… although the 2nd was asking for help for my brothers’s PC… but the truth is that I was here some months ago and you helped me cleaning my computer and all was well around here but… I’m in trouble again :bawling:
I really don’t know what to do… I have Norton Internet Security 2005 with definitions constantly updated…. I have Spywareblaster active… I have Spybot and Adware which I run every now and then… and even so some hours ago I got this message from Norton that I was infected with «hacktool.rootkit»
How can this happen? I have good internet practice (I think?) how can this thing get in my PC?

I opened Norton Activity Log and found out that it has been in here since last Sunday (May 29) and it says there “access denied” and “repair failed”.
It appears to be inside (??) this directory:
C:\Documents and Setting\«all my users names»\msdirectx.sys
But when I search for this file I can’t find it.
I wouldn’t have imagined to be infected if it weren’t for that message from Norton AV.
But now, after the warning, I keep noticing that for instance:
- that something is not allowing me to reboot in safe mode through that exe line “msconfig”… I only could do it rebooting the PC and pressing F8
- also that something keeps Hijackthis from running… I only could run it when I was in safe mode… in normal mode it appears to open but never does
- also, I can’t open task manager in normal mode… it won’t open – I could open it when I was in safe mode and I saw there a very suspicious process like this:
name: process inactive
user: SYSTEM
when I tried to end it, it wouldn’t allow me saying that “the ending of the process was not possible” and “the operation is not valid for this process”
(I have a Portuguese version of Windows and I wonder if this translation of the task manager makes sense to you?)
- and last – I have been having huge trouble trying to get some files through FTP to a website – and as this has never happened before I wonder if it has anything to do with this “thing” that is infesting my PC
I have run Adware and Spybot.
And Norton AV.
Here is the HJT log file that I could get when I was in safe mode a while ago:

1. Run LiveUpdate to make sure that you have the most recent virus definitions.
2. Start Norton AntiVirus (NAV), and make sure that NAV is configured to scan all files. For instructions on how to do this, read the document How to configure Norton AntiVirus to scan all files.
3. Run a full system scan.
4. Delete all files that are detected as Hacktool.Rootkit. (this may need to be done in safe mode if you can't do it in normal mode).

Some questions:
1) How can I run NAV in SAFE MODE? When I reboot into SAFE MODE and then click NAV icon a error message shows up... something about "could'nt run it because of NAV integrator" or something like that.
2) I have 3 users set in this PC. When I clean the PC should I do it 3 times or only through the admnistrator account?
Have you run PandaActivescan and Housecall@trendmicro.com? If so, were there any infections that could not be removed?
I have 2 reports saved here.
One of them is very confusing and long - should I post it here?
This is the other one (Activescan):
Incident Status Location
Virus:Bck/Sdbot.DCT Disinfected Operating system
Adware:Adware/SAHAgent No disinfected Windows Registry
Adware:Adware/EliteBar No disinfected C:\WINDOWS\EliteSideBar
Virus:Trj/Qhost.gen Disinfected C:\Documents and Settings\Carlos Costa\127.0.0.1 localhost
Virus:Trj/Qhost.gen Disinfected C:\Documents and Settings\Rita & João\127.0.0.1 localhost
Virus:Trj/Qhost.gen Disinfected C:\WINDOWS\system32\127.0.0.1 localhost
Let me just tell you that I have not had any other warning about that hacktoo rootkit threat and that when I look in NAV reports it shows the last warning on June 1st.
Plus, I'm able now to go to safe mode through "msconfig" and to open the task manager window (with ctrl+alt+del), both of which I was not allowed to do some days ago.
Do you think it might be gone?
Thanks for your help
C:\WINDOWS\EliteSideBar
Then get ewido security suite:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
Run the setup program and then update it. Run a full scan with ewido security suite. This is a trial version of the full version which is 14 days. After that time period you will still get to keep and use the freeware version.
Post a new log when finished.
C:\WINDOWS\EliteSideBar
and DELETED it
Downoaded ewido security suite and ran it
It found a bunch of cookies - spyware.track cookie
And it found this entry - not-a-virus.pornware.popcap.b
All deleted
