Would that be a worthwhile upgrade? Or would it be better to go right for the X800 pro or XT?
It's going into my A64 shuttle box, so any dual slot cards are out. The card will be used for gaming, the new GTA, Driv3r, some FPS, etc.

The XL actually falls between the Pro and the XT as follows.
Would you consider it a worthwhile upgrade from a 128mb radeon 9800pro?

Chris's "hell yeah!" is almost an understatement! I can't use the language on here that would define my enthusiasem concerning that upgrade. By the way, I went from a 9800 Pro to an X800XL a few months ago and it really set me back for a reality check.

Ok, one last question as I saw the X850 XT was only $150 CDN more. How about that? Or would that be overkill on what an AGP slot can handle?
It would handle it but the price/performance ratio is getting out of wack as the 850 isn't that much more in performance. The X800XL is the best price/performance card with the X800XT a bit more money but worth it as far as price/performance goes and the X850XT is a lot less value. I say get the X800XL if you are certain to get one more AGP card. You will be impressed enough with the performance increase unless you've got the cash to burn and simply want the best!
