A father and son drifting in a dinghy on the North Sea after their home-made boat hit rocks were rescued yesterday when their position was plotted from one brief call on a mobile telephone.
Technicians were able to calculate their position to within five square miles by using the strength of the signal between a coastal mast at Holland-on-Sea and another at a pumping station in nearby Frinton-on-Sea. Coastguards then scrambled an RAF Sea King, two lifeboats and also put an alert out to shipping in the predicted area — about twelve miles off Walton on the Naze — to keep an eye out for the pair.
