neverending popups

hi ive never been to this forum before, but i heard it was amazing and i needed help so here i am


i have ran updated versions of ad-aware, spybot search&destory, & mcafee but i continue getting popups. sometimes i dont even get popups..my computer just like clicks itself away from whatever program i was using as if a popup is going to come up and the cursor turns to an hour glass and all and then no pop up even comes, but it's just as annoying as getting popups and im pretty sure that's not normal.

    I am having this same problem. [(Not with my home computer. The one at Deebe's Coffee Bar.)(Greatest place in the world.)] It runs slow, has issues of the same nature. I've done the same. I got rid of so many issues but they keep on duplicating. It's a mess. Please help us.

    angelica - I'm sorry it took so long for you to get a response. Please follow these instructions and we will get you fixed up.


    Please remove these entries from Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel(if present):

    SurfSideKick




    Download L2mfix from one of these two locations:

    http://www.downloads.subratam.org/l2mfix.exe

    Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

    IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

    i was getting doubtful that i would recieve a reply, but thank you very much for responding :)



    i removed surfsidekick..but i ran into a problem when trying to use l2mfix.

    i downloaded it, and have both folders on my desktop but when i went to open the second there was nothing in it called "l2mfix.bat" ..the closest thing was just called l2mfix and then there was another thing in the folder (same type of file) called second.. i wasnt sure if the 1st one called l2mfix was what i should double click as option 1 and the one called second would be what you referred to as the second option.

    when i double click it, the window that pops up closes super fast. i launched msdos to try and run it that way but it gave me an error: "A subdirectory or file backregs already exists. 'find' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file."

    Step 1
    Download CWShredder but don't run it yet.


    Step 2
    Download Ad-aware SE 1.06
    Install the program and launch it. First, in the main window, look in the bottom right corner and click on Check for updates now and download the latest reference files. Exit Adaware for now.


    Step 3
    Make sure that you can VIEW ALL HIDDEN FILES.


    Step 4
    Run Hijackthis again, click scan, and Put a checkmark next to each of these. Then close all other windows--you should only see HijackThis on your Desktop--and click the Fix Checked button.

    Run a full scan with Adaware.


    Reboot your computer to go back to normal mode.



    Launch Notepad, and copy/paste the box below into a new text file. Save it as FindFile.bat and save it on your Desktop.

    Locate FindFile.bat on your Desktop and double-click on it. It will open Notepad with some text in it. Please post the text here along with a new hijackthis log.

    after running cwshredder, the only file that was there for me to delete was surfsidekick.

    after rebooting and such, i went to double click on "findfile.bat" and the thing where a black window opens up and closes really fast happend. after that a new file thing is on the desktop called "files.txt", which opens in word. it reads:

    Delete this file:

    C:\WINDOWS\System32\r?ndll.exe

    Be careful because there is a legitimate file that may be named very similar to this. The ? symbol could represent any character. The file you want to delete was created on 5/25/05 and is about 430kb.




    Delete temp files

    Navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

    Navigate to the C:\Windows\Prefetch folder. Open the Prefetch folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Prefetch folder.

    Go to Start > Run and type %temp% in the Run box. The Temp folder will open. Click Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

    Finally go to Control Panel > Internet Options. On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files". Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK. Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then OK.

    Empty the Recycle Bin.




    Please run at least two of these online scans.
    Make sure they are set to clean automatically:

    Panda Virus Scan

    Bit Defender

    TrendMicro Housecall

    There will be files that these scans will not remove. Please include that information in your next post.


    Reboot and post a new hijackthis log and the info from your virus scans.

    i went to delete this file C:\WINDOWS\System32\r?ndll.exe and found it with a "u" where the ? is, it was created on 5.25.05 and was 420 kb but i didnt want to delete it if that was the legitimate one.

    the two things i ran were panda & TrendMicro Housecall.. the file that could not be deleted by trendmicro was

    ADW_MIWAY.E Adware Unremovable

    Next delete this file:

    C:\WINDOWS\System32\dzp.exe




    Click Start -> Run -> (type) services.msc

    Scroll down and find the service called System Startup Service When you find it, double-click on it. In the next window that opens, click the Stop button, then click on properties and under the General Tab, change the Startup Type to Disabled. Now hit Apply and then Ok and close any open windows.


    Run Hijackthis and click on Open the Misc Tools section -> Delete an NT Service
    Copy and paste this into the text box and click OK.

    SvcProc


    Reboot and post a new hijackthis log.

    everything went well..except when i went to delete C:\WINDOWS\System32\dzp.exe, it said it didn't exist.

    i used internet explorer last night and for the first time in forever i didnt have any popups and it didnt feel like my computer was going to implode from how slow ie usually goes :D:D thankk you SO MUCH for all your help :D:D

    other than just running ad aware, spybot, & mcafee is there anything else i should do to keep my computer healthy?

    Your log is clean!

    Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
    1. Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and reenable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point left over from what we have just cleaned.

    2. Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
      1. From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
      2. Click once on the Security tab
      3. Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
      4. Click once on the Custom Level button.
        1. Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
        2. Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
        3. Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
        4. Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
        5. Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
        6. Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
        7. When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
        8. If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
      5. Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

    3. Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

    4. Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

    5. Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

    6. Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

    7. Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

    8. Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.

    9. Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

    10. Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
    Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.
