Smitfraud.c Desktop Warning

Hi
First of all thanks for operating this forum and offering help . I made the dumb mistake of opening an .exe file and got the Trojan-Spy.HTML.Smifraud.c on my computer (Dell 4300 - both IE and Firefox loaded, usually use Firefox). I have run AdAwareSEPersonal and it is now showing clean. Also ran Spybot and it only came up with 3 cookie trackers for Firefox, which it fixed. AVG 7.0 shows no infection. I have checked various forums and have tried to follow directions for ridding myself of this, but I honestly don't know enough aboutthe Hijack This logs to know if I am failing to eliminate entries. Through it all I cant shake the blackbox on my desktop with the Warning message. Here is my HijackThis log, any help you can give is appreciated :)

    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Intel system tool] C:\WINDOWS\system32\winnook.exe

    Fix that entry then find and delete this file:
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\winnook.exe

    Then reboot your computer and post a new log.

    entry. Couldnt find C:\WINDOWS\system32\winnook.exe, it may have been deleted in an earlier step I went thru :confused: ?

    Tried that as you suggested. When I rebooted my desktop reverted to a blue background and the theme is listed as Modified Theme (it was Windows XP prior to reboot). Just mentioning in case it holds any clues. Anything else I can post that will shed light?

    Hey SpywareShooter. Thanks for sticking with it. On the first try it wouldnt switch to WindowsXP theme. And if I have a browser window open but minimized it kicks me out to that window shortly after hitting Apply. Anyway on second or third try, it did switch to the WindowsXP theme, the green farm hill & blue sky background, but it still has a black box overlay with the Warning You're In Danger message.

    Try this:
    • Click Start>Control Panel>Display
    • Go to the Desktop tab and click on the Customise Desktop button.
    • Go to the Web tab
    • In the web page box, click on the page that is checkmarked and then click the Delete button.
    • Ok your way out of the dialog and check your desktop.


    Your log still looks clean. Let me know if this fixes your desktop.

    On first try that did not work. But afterwords I got an update message for a program that wasnt familiar to me, one I had kind of had my eye on. Wish I had written down the name, something like Visionaire Viewer and on the Add/Remove programs it had an icon like the windows media viewer. Anyway, I deleted that, then went back followed your suggestion again, deleting the same file I had deleted before, also changed from Modified Theme to Windows XP theme for desktop. That did it! It is such a joy not to have that blackbox warning on my desktop and to fill rid of it all. :p
