Can this proc be RMA'd?

Hi folks. Been trying to sort out Sally's puter with running hot pretty much since we bought/built it last year.

Tsunami case
AA8XE mobo
P 3.4 LGA775
2 x 512 DDRII
2 x 120mm fans
1 x 74Gig Raptor
1 x 200Gig Sata

Added watercooling setup some time ago, no real change.

Yesterday decided to use another case, which i thought might flow better.
Also put it back to normal air cooling. Still running hot.

The heatsink had been lapped and was very flat checking with a straightedge.
Turns out, the cpu is shaped like a bowl, though not as drastic as that. Using the straightedge, there was a definite airgap, showing light. I was pretty much under the impression that this is not the norm.

As it is less than a year old, do you think i have a chance of a successfull RMA?????

The puter had a habit of locking up at times and having to do quite a few soft-boots, i believe now it was also the cause of it killing the 74Gig Raptor.

What are your thoughts??

I say shoot for an RMA, and if that goes down in flames, try to lap the heat spreader into uniformity.

sad but extra friggin as5 might help. You usually need a paper thin layer.

You need more slopped on for that POS cpu.

Normally i put on a small amount off AS5, but yesterday i kept putting more on to see how much it would take till i had proper contact across the CPU & HS. Way too much was needed.

That is when i investigated further, not having had that problem before and found the problem with the cpu.

Had it been an old proc, i would have definitely had a go at lapping it, just too much $$$ invested in this one. :(

Rmaing Intel cpus is no trouble at all, I've done it and enjoy getting new sealed packages, rather than refurbished *leftovers* other parts get replaced with. I am currently getting one right now, this very instant, I just got off the phone.

Of course if you got an oem cpu you are screwed, sorry about that, but it's true, for the RMA anyway.

All they can do is tell you no. Other than the postage, what have you got to lose? :)
