i have a carillon audio pc

setup is as follows

3.00 ghz p4 processor with hyper threading
1gb of ram
240gb sata raid drive
80gb normal drive

i haven been folding for about 16 hours and I am 16% through my first unit.

says my due date for my first unit is august 27th!

is that normal?

im still fairly confused about how the points system and stuff works

would someone please enlighten me?

    Sounds okay.

Different projects require different amounts of time, but you are rewarded with more points for longer projects.

The due date is based on the way that a work unit benchmarks on a really old PC. Something like a Celeron 500 or so, AFAIK. You completion date will likely be much sooner. It's all good.

When you are done there will be a performance factor listed. This is how much of the allowed time is left. You can watch this to see how you are doing time-wise.
But most of us only watch the points. :)

Which protien are you folding? Do you have Hyperthreading enabled? If so, are you running 2 instances of F@H? What is the CPU usage set at?

i just made another instance of f@h

im not sure if i have hyperthreading enabled

i didnt configure the computer but as it is a computer optimized for audio production i would assume that they WOULD have it enabled

also is there any way i can minimize the folding modules to the tray?

im very fussy about my pc housekeeping!

    im on 26% now!

and the new one i started is stuck on 1%

it finishes a frame roughly every ten minutes

it would appear my two folding modules are doing different things

    how come?

There a scores of different proteins being studied in F@H, it's not at all unusual to have two different ones at the same time.

What version of the Folding client are you using?

    FAH5.00

but what i mean is in one window its got
    finished frame 1
    finished frame 2

    etc etc

in the next window its got

    writing local files
    completed 67500 out of 250000 steps <27>
    writing local files
    completer 70000 out of 250000 steps <28>

    how come?

im tempted to get my old laptop networked to my desktop so i can get it online and folding!

all this good samaritain stuff is addictive

is it really worth me doing though?

the laptop is a celeron 463 or 436 one of the two and it only has 128 ram

Okay. To try and help ya out:

You can run two instances of Folding because Folding thinks your computer has two processors instead of one. Thats the joys of hyperthreading. Your system can work on two things at the same time. With folding, there are multiple projects that your machine will do. Looks like your machine is working on a really juicy one and one that folds a bit quicker. Thats okay.

Your Celeron laptop isn't a good choice for folding unless you're hardcore dedicated to the project. It will probably take it over a week to do one WU. The heat from running 24/7 at 100% processor load makes most laptops, especially older ones, unhappy. There are ways to set it up so that you don't fry things, but for now you probably don't want to do that.

    Anyways, welcome to the team.

anyone got any other tips to speed up my folding rate?

im currently running three instances of F@H and it seems to be going on (if a little slow)

I am very impatient and very competitve!

i am currently number 605 in the team 93 board but i wanna get into top 300 at some point

so is there any way of increasing output?

if only for when im not at the computer

    that would be a touch

It all takes time, as I posted in your other thread you will see that some units take more time than others. Folding also depends on how much you use your comp after all it takes unused cpu cycles to work.

There are flags that can be set to help ie. if you get a power blip and your comp restarts, you may loose the SSE boost on Gromacs cores.

    fair enough

is there a way to set it so it uses more resources when im not actually on it?

or does it do that by itself?
  • GHoosdumGHoosdum Icrontian

It'll use all the available resources that you're not using. Typically if you're not on the PC, it will be using 99% of the CPU time.
