Video Card Problem - Games Crashing to Desktop

edited June 2005 in Hardware
I have an ATI Radeon 9100. Everytime I load a game, it crashes to the desktop. I've tried updating the drivers a few times. It seems that once I update the drivers, I can get the game to work once. Then next time I load it up, same thing, crash to desktop.

I have XP - SP2.

Any tips?

    Sounds like a software problem

Is there a patch for the game ?

It's actually happening with all games. It started with Sim City 4. Then some random DL'd games. Now StarCraft.

Doesn't sound like a video card problem to me... maybe RAM, maybe even PSU. Run memtest86.

Does it give you any errors? Are you overclocking anything?

The other guys gave you good advice. You might also try reinstalling DirectX.

    RAM is ok, thanks.

I'm actually underclocking the CPU. The MB only allows upto 1.8GHZ. The CPU is a 2.4 AMD, so I have it running at 1.8.

That's the correct speed for an AMD 2400. Their rating is not tied to actual clock speed, but rather to performance. :)

    Psst, Prof-AFAIK a 2400xp is 2ghz. :hiding:

What other programs are running in the background? Are they completely crashing or just minimizing to the taskbar? The reason I ask is on my wifes machine (2400xp), older games will randomly minimize to the taskbar or just momentarily black out. She doesn't play any video intensive games. This happens with a TNT2, Radeon 7000,7500,9250,9500pro and various different drivers.

It depends on the core, but you are correct: all 2400+ are indeed 2GHz. :o

    The complete list is here.

A bios update might fix that, clozepin. :)

It won't solve your crashing problem, though. :(
