HSA/Winshow--Help needed please

Howdy folks. I'm about at my wits end trying to fix my wifes computer after it has been infected with what looks to be the HSA trojan (it also shows up as Winshow with Spybot).

I have run Spybot and Adaware plus have done a full system scan with Norton Antivirus 2004. I have also run through the HSA removal guide that I found on your site twice but it keeps coming back. I'm now on my third runthrough and wanted to have someone look at it before I press on. Thanks for any help you can provide.

Just a couple of notes before I post the logs...I did find a Network Security Service that had a bunch of weird characters in the name. I have disable that and found the corresponding registry entry and deleted that. It also pointed to a file in system32\sdkgj.exe that I have also deleted. Also, I have run about:Buster in safe mode and it is coming up clean and have run CWS Shredder in safe mode and it is also coming up clean.

I have 3 HJT logs to provide. The first was from normal operation, the second after booting into safe mode, and the third after a removal process. If you could take a look at the log and see if there is anything I missed I would certainly appreciate it. I'm completely out of ideas, hopefully you experts see something I overlooked.

Are you sure you are running the latest version of AboutBuster? Here is a basic fix. Run it and post the logs and then we'll go from there.


You may want to print out these instructions or save them to your desktop as a text file with Notepad because we will be restarting into Safe Mode later on in the fix and you might not be able to access the Internet.

1. Prepare CWShredder for use:
   • Download CWShredder.
   • Save CWShredder.exe to a convenient location.
   • Please do not do anything with it yet.
2. Prepare AboutBuster for use:
   • Download AboutBuster.
   • Unzip the contents of AboutBuster.zip and an AboutBuster directory will be created.
   • Navigate to the AboutBuster directory and double-click on AboutBuster.exe.
   • Click "OK" at the prompt with instructions.
   • Click "Update" and then "Check For Update" to begin the update process.
   • If any updates exist please download them by clicking "Download Update".
   • You should not run the program yet so click "Exit".
3. Prepare cwsserviceremove.reg for use:
   • Download cwsserviceremove.zip.
   • Unzip the contents of cwsserviceremove.zip (cwsserviceremove.reg) to your desktop.
   • Please do not do anything with it yet.

Reconfigure Windows XP to show hidden files:
Click Start. Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options. Select the View Tab.

Under the Hidden files and folders heading select "Show hidden files and folders".
Uncheck the "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" option.
Uncheck the "Hide file extensions for known file types" option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.

Boot into Safe Mode:
Restart your computer and immediately begin tapping the F8 key on your keyboard.
If done right a Windows Advanced Options menu will appear. Select the Safe Mode option and press Enter.
To return to normal mode just restart your computer as you normally would.

1. Run CWShredder:
   • Double-click on CWShredder.exe.
   • Click "Fix ->" and click "OK" at the prompt.
   • CWShredder will scan and clean your system of CWS files.
   • Click "Next->" and then "Exit".
2. Remove the offending service:
   • Double-click on cwsserviceremove.reg you downloaded earlier.
   • When it asks you to merge the information to the registry click "Yes".
3. Run AboutBuster and save the logs:
   • Browse to where you saved AboutBuster and run AboutBuster.exe.
   • Click OK at the directions prompt.
   • Click Start and then OK to allow AboutBuster to scan for Alternate Data Streams.
   • Click Yes to allow it to shutdown explorer.exe.
   • It will begin to your computer for malicious files. If it asks if you would like to do a second pass, allow it to do so.
   • When it has finished, click Save Log. Make sure you save it as I need a copy of it.
4. Clean out temporary files:
   • Start | Run | type cleanmgr | OK
   • Let it scan your system for files to remove.
   • Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are the only things checked.
   • Click "OK" to remove them.
   • Click "Yes" to confirm the deletion.
5. Restart your computer normally to return to normal mode.
6. Free TrendMicro Housecall scan:
   • Vist the TrendMicro Housecall website.
   • Select your country from the drop-down list and click "Go".
   • Choose "Yes" at the ActiveX Security Warning prompt.
   • Please wait while the Housecall engine is updated.
   • Select the drives to be scanned by placing a check in their respective boxes.
   • Check the "Auto Clean" box.
   • Click "SCAN" in order to begin scanning your system.
   • Please be patient while Housecall scans your system for malicious files.
   • If not auto-cleaned, remove anything it finds.
   • Click "Close" to exit the Housecall scanner.
   • Choose "Yes" at the HouseCall message prompt.
7. Prepare your reply:
   • Please post a fresh HijackThis log
   • Please post the AboutBuster log.
   • Please note any complications you had.

Thank you for your reply. I do have the current version of all programs that I am trying. I did a hard reboot and as you can see from the logs below, it came back. Just like last time I ran HJT while the computer was running in normal mode (HJT log 1). I then hard booted into safe mode and ran HJT again (log 2), and then fixed the entries I thought might be part of the problem and ran HJT again (log 3). I also ran CWShredder, the cwsserviceremove.reg file, aboutBuster, Ad Aware, and Spybot all while in Safe mode. I followed all steps to disable services, registry entries, temporary files, etc. This is the 4th complete time I've run through all the steps and I'm just not sure what I am missing. Thanks for all of the help.

Let me clarify a few things so we are both operating on the same page here.

1. Don't hard boot unless specifically told to hard boot. Just reboot normally.

2. You are showing me all these logs that I don't need to see. Just show the log(s) that is requested in my instructions.

3. I realize that you have been battling this for a while, but please do not run additional programs other than the ones listed in the fix. It makes it more difficult to analyze the results if you are taking additional steps.


Please reboot normally and post one hijackthis log from normal mode. I'm sure we can get you cleaned up quickly.

Yep, your log is clean.

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

1. Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and reenable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point left over from what we have just cleaned.

2. Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
   1. From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
   2. Click once on the Security tab
   3. Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
   4. Click once on the Custom Level button.
      1. Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
         
      2. Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
         
      3. Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
         
      4. Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
         
      5. Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
         
      6. Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
         
      7. When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
         
      8. If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
   5. Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
   
   
3. Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

4. Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
   
   
5. Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

6. Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
   
   
7. Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

8. Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.

9. Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

10. Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.
