RAID disappearance - help

edited June 2005 in Hardware
Of all things!!! Soyo KT-400 Dragon Platinum with the Highpoint controller onboard - 2 drives (maxtor 160 gb ata-133) configured as masters (one on each channel) and 2 drives (maxtor 30 gb ata-133) as slaves (standalone drives - no raid array). Has been working for forever.

I disconnected the two standalone 30's and the raid array on the two other drives just up and disappeared! the bios registers the drives but does not list the array name. the machine locks and says "disk read error" (likely due to the array not being registered by the HPT bios?). the array was partitioned into two (2) drive letters, the largest being the C: (boot) drive and the smaller (F:) containing a bunch of data that i haven't backed up!! (yeah, i know - but when did disconnecting two standalone drives screw up anything - until now, i guess....)

any help/recommendations would be really appreciated.

thanks,
myke

Try rebuilding the array. Just set it up in bios like before but don't change anything or erase the drives. These things can get real sticky by the smallest changes, ie; removing a drive.

Also recheck the cabling again. Make sure you didnt loosen a connector or anything.

You just unplugged the other two right? You didnt move the connectors plugged into the current drives etc..

unplugged and removed them. did not remove the raid drives and made sure they were cabled exactly like before.

previous repost says to "rebuild the array". I thought about that, but the bios program says "all data on drives will be erased" when i get that far. admittedly scared to press "yes", so have exited it at that point.

    i should mention that this is a raid 0 ... not a raid 1. u mentioned "rebuild"....does that mean (and i guess i'm being too literal) "re-define"?

    thanks

The HPT's I worked with would initialize the drives when you made a new array. I wouldnt go that route.

Have you tried just plugging the old drives back in just for kicks and grins?

You need to get on the horn to HPT tech support then. They sometimes offer up special tool and utilitys to solve problems like this.
