Bizarre email security issue

edited June 2005 in Science & Tech
My father is using outlook express for email and has been missing lots of messages. He has finally figured out that something or someone is changing his incoming mail POP to "127.0.0.1" instead of his normal POP3.myacc.net. He is running XP on a home computer that is hooked directly to the internet. Is this a virus or has someone hacked into his comptuer? Either way, how can he fix the problem and ensure it does not occur again?

Thanks in adance for the help!!

    Is he running anti-virus ..?

Some antivirus programs run an internal proxy to scan email and so will make that legitimate adjustment of his pop3 address :)

Yes, he's running McAfree. Would shutting McAfree down for a few days test to see if it is changing the pop3 address?

    I appreciate your help!

    Thanks,

Try just disabling the e-mail scanning portion of McAffee and see what that does. Have him be very cautious of any e-mails that come in, if they are from a source he does not recognize and have any attachments, delete them.

    Let us know.
