XP Safe mode/trojan issue
Hello Shortmedia.
Your assistance please... A Mate of mine got the Smit-fraud trojan a couple of days ago.
(Sorry at this point I don't know which version of XP home he is running or any PC spec - please let me know what details I need to ask him for.)
The PC boots up, gets to the user menu, goes into the desktop, where a desktop restore message is displayed, then a window appears saying "windows explorer has an error and will close - any unsaved work may be lost" The Blue screen of death then takes over displaying the details of the Smit-fraud Trojan, and we go back to the desktop restore page and the process starts again...
Also, Pressing F8 when booting up doesn't give me the option to start the PC in safe mode. I guess different versions of XP home require different safe mode starts? Guess it'll have to be done from the XP home disk?
From what I understand, when the trojan infected the PC my buddy clicked several "no's" and "cancels" on pop-up windows (not the X's in top right corner.) and also deleted a handful of shortcuts and programs on the desktop.
As soon as I can get the windows explorer error message to stop re-occuring I'll run Hijackthis, spybot, and adaware and then post you the Hijackthis log.
Any words of wisdom you can offer would be appreciated.
Thanks loads in advance ~ T-O.
