sharing a printer

How do I setup a printer on my wireless laptop? I've run the Netowrk Wizard on both the laptop and the PC but unsure if im doing something wrong because it doesnt seem to work.

The printer is connected to the PC but I want to print from the laptop aswell. Both are Win XP Home.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks :)

    Make sure that you've shared the printer on the other computer. (Make sure the little hand is underneath it.) If it hasn't, you should be able to share it via a right click on it in the Control Panel.

    Then, on the laptop, add a printer, choose network printer. You should be able to browse to it via the computer it is connected to.

    I've never messed around with the "wizard-ry" of XP, so I don't know how to double check those steps.

    Make sure it shows up in the control panel (where you can also set it as the default printer.)

    On the PC in control panel > printers and faxes my printer (which is a stand alone printer) has the hand showing meaning sharing is enabled? I go on the laptop, try and add a printer but it cant detect it - all its finds is Microsoft Network something. I tpye in the 'share name' for the printer and that doesnt get recongnised.

    Do I need to install the printer drives on the laptop? :confused: What other options are there?

    You shouldn't need to install the drivers on the laptop.

    (Try this first:) Start > Run > \\desktopname

    Assuming you've set up the desktop correctly, you should see the printer as a share. If you right click on it, there should be an option to connect (or something like that.)

    I typed in \\desktopname in start > run on both the PC and Laptop and I get an error saying '\\desktopname - the network path was not found' on both pc and laptop.

    by desktopname, i mean the network name of your desktop computer. You can find it through the system applet in the CP.

    I appreciate your help telfleming. I emailed HP for help and unforunatly my printer doesn't have wireless capabilites. I have the HP Deskjet 5552.

    NO,NO,NO! It would be easier if your printer did have wireless capability, but not necessary,necessarily!
    Your laptop connects to the network either wired or wirelessly, right?
    Your printer is connected, with drivers installed, to your desktop, right?
    Your desktop is connected to the network, right?
    You have run the network setup wizard from XP on both computers, right?
    You have shared the printer in its properties page, right?
    You have gone to the control panel on the laptop, selected printers and other hardware, add a printer and searched the network for the printer. You must be searching the network that both the computers are on, which is typically, as I recall, MSHOME, and both computers ad the printer must be powered up.
    You then should see the printer and be able to set it as the default. Remember, both computers MUST be on for this to work.

    For me to get all my internet sharing to work I had to open my LAN properies and select File and Printer sharing. I installed Client Service Protocal. waited a lil and it showed up.

    Why would it need to have? If the printer is connected to a PC you can use it on a network. HP told me once that a faulty monitor I had didn't support degaussing!!! This was their expert at their monitor division!!!!! The fact that it was a CRT and had a button on the front marked 'DEGAUSE' meant nothing to this guy.

    Your desktop is connected to the network, right? The router is connected to the PC, Yes (I have 1 PC and 1 laptop)

    You have run the network setup wizard from XP on both computers, right? Yes If you see the attached pic below, that is what I get at the end of running the Wizard on the PC. Now, if I chose 'create a network setup disk' it only allows the option for a floppy disk (the laptop does not have a floppy drive). I have a USB storage drive but there no option to change it to that. I dont have a network disk nor do I have a XP CD. I just choose the last option to finish the wizard. Again, I did the same thing on the laptop.
