Help please with Trojan-Spy.HTML.Smitfraud.c and trojanDownloader.Swizzor.cw

Hello,
My computer was recently infected with atleast two trojans (the two listed in the title) and maybe others. I have used both Adaware and spybot search and destroy, both seemed to work fine. I also tried CWshredder and Ewido but those only go so far and then the system crashes only to reboot. I've been doing all of this in safe mode because the system usually crashes within a 30 seconds of booting up in normal mode. In normal mode, just before crashing, the system says that msn messenger needs to close and that the file cssrs.exe (which is very similar to csrss.exe, I have no evidence of any correlation) is having problems and needs to close. I have gone through the Trojan-Spy.HTML.Smitfraud.c remover guide but all the files that I need to get rid of are missing, all of them, yet in normal mode the desktop still explains the situation for me.

This is my hackthis file while in safe mode.

Please make sure that all hidden files and folders are viewable:

    Open my computer>click tools>click folder options>
click view tab>check show hidden files>uncheck hide file extensions>
    click apply>click OK>exit
    Post a new log.
  • edited June 2005
    Thanks,
I must have done that incorrectly earlier. I may have gotten rid of the smitfraud trojan but I'm not completely sure because the system is still crashing. Now what should I do?

Make sure your hidden files and folders are viewable and then post a new log so we can make sure that you are completely spyware/malware/trojan free.

I'm still having problems with the Swizzor and I think that my bsrsdwpi.exe and xpdtouse.exe files are infected with one of the two.

Now delete these files if they exist:
    C:\WINDOWS\svchost.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\Services\{FAC4E058-214D-42A9-AB41-51CD833A058C}\SVCHOST.EXE

Be very cautious when deleting these that you don't delete the legitimate files. The legitimate files for svchost.exe are in the system 32 folder in Windows directory. The first entry here should be found in the windows directory: open the windows folder and look for this file. The second file should be found in a sub directory called "services" located in the system 32 directory. If you do not find this then do not delete anything in the system 32 folder.

    Download regcleaner from here:
    http://majorgeeks.com/RegCleaner_d460.html

Run the setup file and then run regcleaner. Click on the tools tab>registry cleanup>auto registry cleaner. Check all items listed when regcleaner finishes. This will get rid of old and useless registry entries.

Post a new log when finished.

I wasn't able to locate either of the two svchost.exe files, but I searched my computer and one at C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download\6ca7b3a8efd5a9b6f87fff395a2eb989 but I didn't delete it of course. Here's the new log after all the other steps though. I'll wait for your reply to restart in normal mode. But thanks alot anyway for all the help you've given me.

If there is an svchost file anywhere other than the system32 folder than it does not belong. Do you know what is in this folder and where it came from C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download\6ca7b3a8e fd5a9b6f87fff395a2eb989?

Close all windows and thenrun HiJack This again placing a checkmark next to these entries and clicking Fix Checked:

Then delete this file if present:

I deleted both hackthis files but wasn't able to find the drct16.dll. I have no idea was that software distribution folder is for but it has nearly 500mb of documents and programs. I'll delete the svchost is the software distribution folder, but I'm hesitant with the rest of the folder because it contains programs like wpabaln.exe, winlogon.exe, and taskmgr.exe. Most of the files in Software Distribution were created around last August. I searched for the wpabaln.exe file and found three copies 1) in system 32 2) in system32-dllcache 3) at C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download\6ca7b3a8efd5a9b6f87fff395a2eb989. I found six winlogon.exe and and three taskmgr.exe. Here's the latest log:

Do a search for the drct16.dll and delete it if found.

Then download cleanup 4.0 from here:
    http://www.stevengould.org/software/cleanup/download.html

Run the setup program to install it. Run this program and post a new log.

I didn't find the drct16.dll so I downloaded CleanUp and ran it but everytime when CleanUp start scanning a few moments later the computer will crash. This is in safe mode too. It was doing this same thing when I tried running Ewido and Shredder. It seems to be getting hung up in some temporary files folder but I'm not sure which one.

    Hi cksr_mach5. Can you please do the following;

Download Killbox v2.0.0.175 and unzip the file to your Desktop and have it ready to use.

    -

Save all the below files to a text document (notepad) to be used shortly.

    C:\WINDOWS\svchost.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\drct16.dll

    -

Reboot into safe mode following the instructions here.

Scan with hijackthis and tick the boxes next to all the following entries, then close all browser and explorer windows and hit the "Fix checked" button.

    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [System] C:\WINDOWS\svchost.exe

    O20 - Winlogon Notify: drct16 - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\drct16.dll

    -

Open the text file you saved previously and right click and drag your cursor over the files to highlight them and then use Control+C to copy them to the clipboard..
Open KILLBOX and go to File...."Paste From Clipboard". All the files should now appear in the box (click on the Tab and check to make sure that only the files I have identified as malware and marked for deletion are there) . Then checkmark the "Delete on Reboot" box..and click the red X. You will get a message saying "File will be deleted on next reboot" , Process and Reboot now?" Click "Yes" and post a new log when you have rebooted.

    -

Go here and download and run Silent Runners.vbs. It generates a log, please post the information back in this thread.
If you have a script blocking program, please allow the file to run. It is not malicious.

Well, I rebooted in normal mode and nothing catastophic has happened yet so I'm extremely pleased. I have no idea how I run the Silent Runners.vbs, so I didn't go ahead with that. I still have many more processes listed than I'm used to so there must be some lingering damage on the computer still. Thanks a ton. Here's the new log:
