cws home search assistant

The anti-spyware on my PC tells me it is infected with CWS-home search assistant. However none of the anti-spyware programs can remove it - they just crash.

I have tried to follow the instructions on your website at

http://www.short-media.com/review.php?r=259&p=2

but am unable to find any of the bogus services you list in Step 4.

I am attaching the text files created by Get Active Services.vbs and HijackThis.exe

Any advice you can supply would be very much appreciated.

I confirm that I have updated and run Adaware and Spybot before creating the attachments.

Place a checkmark next to these entries and click Fix Checked:

    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://hsremove.com/done.htm

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Int ernet Settings,ProxyOverride = 127.0.0.1

    R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - _{00A6FAF6-072E-44cf-8957-5838F569A31D} - (no file)

Download and run ewido security suite:

    http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

Then run one of these online scans (if possible):

Post a new log when finished.

    Thank you for your instructions.

I re-ran HJT, placed a checkmark next to the following entries and clicked Fix Checked:
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://hsremove.com/done.htm
    R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - _{00A6FAF6-072E-44cf-8957-5838F569A31D} - (no file)

However, the third entry you identified:
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyOverride = 127.0.0.1
did not appear in the listing.

I downloaded and ran ewido security suite.

I then ran the online scan from http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ on all drives on my PC. It took forever but didn't find any infected files.

I re-ran Spyware Doctor (that being the program that originally found the CWS/HSA infection) and once again it found it as follows:
    CWS.Home Search Assistant
    Infection risk level: High
Infection description: A variant of CWS that hijacks Internet Explorer's about:blank page to a search page, and prevent the users from using other search engines.
As before, Spyware Doctor crashed when I attempted to use it to remove the infection.

I then rebooted and ran Spyware Doctor again, with the same result.

I then re-ran HJT and this time it found the third (R1) entry that you identified, so I checked and fixed it.

I ran Spyware Doctor for a third time, and CWS/HSA is still there and unremovable.

At this point I produced a new HJT log copied below.

One further query: when I was originally following the HSA removal instructions posted on your website, I disabled System Restore (Step 3). Is it right to leave it disabled?

Thanks very much for your time and expertise. I'm at a loss to know what to do next. Any further advice would be much appreciated.

    Jennifer

Boot up in safe mode and run spyware doctor (if it will run in safe mode).I'm not familiar with that program so I'm not positive if it can be. also run CWShredder while in safe mode.

To enter safe mode tap f8 at the start up screen>from the menu select safe mode>Run the programs.

Reboot and let me know if the infection was able to be removed.

    Booted in safe mode.
Ran CWShedder - which reported that CWS was "not found on this system".
Ran Spyware Doctor - which as before reported infection with CWS/HSA and crashed when removal attempted.

    Rebooted in normal mode.
Ran Spyware Doctor again - with same results as before.

System Restore is still disabled. Is that right or should it be enabled at some point?

Do you still have problems/symptoms of being infected with CWS? I do not see anything in your log that suggests that you are still infected.
  • edited June 2005
    Hi

I don't have any problems/symptoms other than a slow-running machine. The only definite indication of the CWS infection is the report when I run Spyware Doctor which then crashes when removal is attempted. I've emailed PC Tools (who market the SD software) to ask if there's a chance that the report is wrong but have received no response from them.

How much memory do you currently have? What processor? Slow could mean several things not just spyware/malware. Spyware doctor is not showing a definite file name/location so it's difficult to see what needs to be deleted. Mkae sure that all hidden files are viewable:

    Open my computer>click tools>click folder options>
click view tab>check show hidden files>uncheck hide file extensions>
    click apply>click OK>exit

    Post a new log please.

Total physical memory = 512 Mb.
    Processor = x86 Family 15 Model 2 Stepping 9 GenuineIntel ~2793 Mhz
Hidden files are viewable in Windows Explorer.

I have at last had a response from PC Tools who have admitted that there was a bug in Spyware Doctor which resulted in the false reporting of CWS/HSA infection. The problem can now be resolved by downloading their latest definition updates.

Thank you very much for all your help.

Here's a few tips to help keep your system secure:

    Spywareblaster http://majorgeeks.com/SpywareBlaster_d2859.html
This will block certain spyware/malware from entering your system (if you don't have spywareblaster or spyware shooter already).

Make sure you take all of the microsoft updates when they become available.

Make sure you keep your AV/Spyware programs updated and run them periodically.

Your welcome. If you have any more problems please let us know.
