Help, I'm infected and I can't cure it...

Hi. I'm a novice at this but I hope to catch on quick enough to avoid annoying too many of you...

I'm on my laptop and my desktop has got at least these "bad things:"

CoolWWWSearch.Aff.Winshow
Trek Blue Error Nuker
Startpage-EH

Also, my START button functions have been affected...

I have HIJACKTHIS on a flashdrive and I've run it...I tried to read-up on how it works and how someone like me can do a lot of unintentional damage...I also have ABOUT BUSTER and I can get SPYBOT S&D to load & run, but it does so with some cocreateinstance failed notices. Spysweeper and McAfee Virus Scan 2005 (which I had running when the worms/trojans/hijackers/malware came through and disabled it) and Norton Antivirus 2005 will not load (however, I did a CD boot and it found nothing)

Please pardon my etiquette errors and will someone please help?

You have an HSA infection. The filenames on this type of infection can change each time you reboot your computer or use Internet Explorer. With that in mind, some of these filenames may be different. But the pattern is the same and you may be able to determine the correct files to remove. The sooner you perform this fix, the higher it's chances for success.

Much of this fix has to be performed in Safe Mode where you won't be able to access the Internet.
    Please print out these instructions.

    Step 1
Download CWShredder but don't run it yet.

    Step 2
    Download AboutBuster
Unzip it to your desktop but don't run it yet.

    Step 3
    Download Ad-aware SE 1.06
Install the program and launch it. First, in the main window, look in the bottom right corner and click on Check for updates now and download the latest reference files. Exit Adaware for now.

    Step 5
Make sure that you can VIEW ALL HIDDEN FILES.

    Step 6
Reboot your computer into SAFE MODE

    Step 7
Run Hijackthis again, click scan, and Put a checkmark next to each of these. Then close all other windows--you should only see HijackThis on your Desktop--and click the Fix Checked button.

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AlcxMonitor] ALCXMNTR.EXE

    Step 8
Now run CWShredder, making sure to click "Fix".

    Step 9
Then delete these files or directories (Do not be concerned if they do not exist)

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\zbzrf.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\ieul32.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\ALCXMNTR.EXE

    Step 10
Double click AboutBuster.exe that you downloaded earlier. Click OK, click Start, then click OK. This will scan your computer for the bad files and delete them. Save the report(copy and paste into notepad or wordpad and save as a .txt file) and post a copy back here when you are done with all the steps.

    Step 11
Run a full scan with Adaware.

Reboot your computer to go back to normal mode and post a new hijackthis log and the log from About Buster.

Thanks Buckeye_Sam, I really appreciate your help.

I've done as you indicated. In SAFEMODE, none of my CWShredder/AboutBuster/AdAware icons were present...so I ran those programs off of my flashdrive, while still in SAFEMODE.

    Results:

    CWShredder found nothing
    AboutBuster deleted 2 streams
AdAware deleted 1 file named "ALEXA"

Logs: Please see last entry for AboutBuster (I'd run it before)
HJT is from Normal Mode after SAFEMODE

I thought I should let you know that the START button is still only half operable and that the home page has been directed to "about blank" again.

You should be able to set your home page to whatever you want now.

Fix this line with Hijackthis, then reboot and post a new hijackthis log.

I've reset the Home Page...thanks for all your help, but I'm not out of the woods yet.

My Start button is still diminished by several commands, all I really have on there is the MY pictures & the like, and when I seledt "All Programs," I get nothing. Any idea what has caused this?

I find that I still cannot install some programs (Spybot, etc), I keep getting a "cocreateinstance" failure.

I also ran AdAware again and found 8 "Alexa" files, after havng got rid of 1 yesterday.

Here is the present HJT log:

On my START button, here's what's missing:
    Favorites
    My Computer
    My Network Places
    Set Program Access & Defaults
Printers & Faxes [but I got this one back with a changed icon]
    Help & Support
    Search
    Run

I did a right click on the tool bar and found that all of the above (except the Printers & Faxes) were already selected...they have just been erased off of the Start button. Still, I checked Printers and it did reappear on the START button (with a different icon)

Also, I find that I cannot left click start any on my programs through their icons, I have to do a right click and select "open"....

How can I repair this damage/undo the changes....?

Do you think that I can reconnect the cable modem/internet to my desktop computer?

Go to C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu and tell me what's in that folder.
  • edited June 2005
    In it are:

    Programs
    Set Program Access and Defaults
    Window Catalog
    Windows Update

Take a look at the info on this page and let me know if it helps.

    Thanks...great page.

I had already gone through that selection process, and despite having selected those items (i.e. My Computer) they don't appear...even after rebooting.

I tried to install SpySweeper and I was given a "cocreateinstance failed" error message, does this mean that some of my essential Windows XP components may have been damaged or erased...?

Try these two reg files, one at a time. Right click and save to your desktop. To run the reg file, double click and ok the prompt to merge.

    http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs_edits/nodesktop.reg

and then if that doesn't work, try this one.

    http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs_edits/startmenuenable.reg

I'm not familiar with that error, but if these reg files don't restore your start menu correctly then the next step is to restore and corrupted or missing system files.
  • edited June 2005
    How would I do that....
  • edited June 2005
From looking at my last HJT log...does it appear that I'm virus free...?

I'm assuming that the reg files didn't work?

Your last log is clean. In order to check for and restore any corrupted or missing files -
Click Start -> Run -> (then type in) sfc /scannow

It will ask for your Windows disc to restore any files that it needs.

If this doesn't resolve your problem then the last step is a repair installation of Windows XP.

  • edited June 2005
I ran the sfc /scannow...but I had to change to a classic Start menu (it was the only way to get to my Run command)...anyway, it ran and then closed without telling me that I had anything wrong (it also did not tell me that I had everything right, either).

I'll try the repair installation, and see what happens...just a thought, but what if I try to do a restore to like a week before I caught the virus...?

You can do a system restore, but you will probably restore some of the malware that we have just removed. And there's no guarantee that it will fix your problem. But it is an option to try.
