Windows 98 Shutdown Problems

There are a cuople problems I seem to have, and my instincts tell me they might be related somehow.

This could be hardware, but I am unsure since the OS I am using on this particular system is Windows 98SE with that unoffical SP2 release. It is fully updated BTW.

One problem I have is that I have to goto the "shutdown" sequence twicein order for it to shutdown properly. The first time seems to close a few programs, but then just stops, the second time is the charm though and it will shutdown properly.

Another issue is something very strange I haven't seen this happen except when I leave my computer for a while and come back and it appears to still be on, but no picture on my monitor. I push a few keys on the keyboard, move the mouse around, press the powerbutton, nothing seems to "wake" it up. I figured it to be a hibernation problem, but I disabled it in the settings for the screensaver which originally had the turn off harddrive after 1 hour enabled. But no longer.

Thanks guys.

A couple of weeks ago I re-did my Win98 box with the un-official sp2, didn't have any issue with the software. (although the de-frag did seem slow compared to other versions)

Could it be a setting in the BIOS? (I'm grasping at straws here. :) ) where bios settings are overriding Windows?

I'll look into that, but I doubt it since the last OS was 2000 and it didn't do this.
