wish list: I'd like a patch to disable RES:
Hi All. I'm a tech guy, but not a developer. I used to be an eternity ago.
I'm in search of a patch which would *really* help me: I'd like to disable the RES: feature in Internet Explorer. Temporarily would be best, but permanently would do.
A lot of kick-ass problems get in because they can tell MSIE what to do through a DLL. If I could remove that functionality, a lot of dead computers I fix would return to life again.
People pay for my help by the hour, but get discouraged when I tell them that some things are impossible because they'll take me just too long to be cost effective for them.
So, I've digressed.
Do you know about a program, a patch, a setting, a (something) which prevents the syntax RES://path\file.dll from working?
Developers:
I was thinking there should be a way to rename RES to SER or anything so the letters it's looking for have changed. But I've gone into the code without the right tools, and haven't seen the letters "RES" sitting together.
By patching the letters, I suppose we could patch them back once the Spy-trojan-virus was actually removed.
I'm just thinking aloud.
